    Biography
    • Burdett Maxwell "Speck" Musgrove was one of three children born to William J. (1875-1920/31 and Nell D. "Nellie" (Hamilton) (1885-1966) Musgrove. Nellie was from Sac County, Iowa, a daughter of Francis A. and Susan E. Hamilton. William was from Mississippi, worked as a salesman as a younger man, and later for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The nature of his job or jobs evidently led to the family moving around a lot.

William J. and Nellie had three children, a son, William Calvin, and daughter, Elizabeth Katherine, both of whom were older than Burdett.

Brother William Calvin (Musgrove) was born September 8, 1909, in Arizona. Sister Elizabeth Katherine (Musgrove) was born in 1911 in Tucson, but in 1910, at the time of the federal census, the family was living El Paso, Texas. The family lived in Arizona, El Paso, and California at various times until about 1930 or so.

Sometime after 1920 but before 1931, father William died, and soon afterwards Nell took the children and returned to El Paso, where they stayed until after the oldest two children of the family were married. Nellie returned to California at least by 1954, when she was listed in the voter registration lists of Long Beach.

Wedding announcements for Speck's siblings, William and Elizabeth in 1936 and 1937, indicate their father probably died before 1930, but the 1930 federal census was unclear about this. Before they returned to Texas, their mother Nell was living with her three children in Long Beach, California, and although William J. was not listed with the family as living with them, Nell was listed as "married" rather than "widowed." Of course that might have been an enumeration error.

William Calvin Musgrove, Speck's brother, married local El Paso socialite, Elizabeth Faye Clifton, on March 12, 1937. He died June 29, 1980, in Los Angeles County, California. Sister Elizabeth Katherine Musgrove married Van C. Wilson, Jr. (1909-1978) on December 9, 1936, in El Paso.

Burdett and wife Elizabeth Mae "Betty" Westberg were probably married not long after the end of World War II, as son William Albert Musgrove was born in Texas in 1947. Their first three children were all born in El Paso (their third child, daughter Pamela, died at the age of two weeks). Their youngest child, Judy, was evidently not born in Texas, so it seems possible around 1952 or 1953 they moved, and in due time if not directly after leaving El Paso, they ended up in Champaign, Illinois.

The records from the Social Security Administration for Burdett and Betty indicate their last residence was in Farmington, San Juan County, New Mexico. Possibly they left Illinois at some point and returned south for retirement. Betty died only several few months after her mother, Bernice (Walker) Westberg, and, as it is known Bernice died in Champaign, Illinois, she possibly was living with a grandchild rather than with her son-in-law and daughter, Speck and Betty.

    Research
    • According to the 1920 federal census, their oldest son was "Robert H. Musgrove," age 11. This child was not living with them at the time of the 1910 census, when Nell had "one child born" who was William. Robert is not mentioned as a sibling in the engagement announcements for William or Elizabeth from the El Paso society pages of the 1930s. It's not sure that he existed, but if he did he wasn't the son of William J. and Nell.
