    • MOYERS SPEAKS TO FARMERS UNION

The Henry County Farmer's Union met in regular session Wednesday at their hall with the following numbers feature on the program.

Earl Moyers of Burlington, who is a representative of the Iowa Farmer Union, spoke of a recent trip to Washington with a caravan of three bus loads of Farmers' Union people. In the group were ninety-nine people and 182 others from a number of other states.

The purpose of the trip was to bring pressure on Congress for legislation favorable to farmers as embodied in the Farmers' Union program which embraces many features of the Brannan Plan. Mr. Moyers contended that nothing short of 100% of parity for family type farmers was fair to agriculture.

He spoke further about the need for farmers to organize in their own organization, uncontrolled by other pressure groups.

Following Mr. Moyers' talk, the group planned a membership drive which will begin March 7 and will be assisted by Mr. Moyers. Committees will be under the county organization whos president is Melvin Ford and the West Pleasant Lawn local, headed by Don Carper. The opinion seemed prevalent that the residents of the community are uni(n)formed about the merits of the organization and the plan being supported for the benefits of agriculture.

No business or program had been prepared for the Pleasant Lawn local so adjournment was early and was followed by refreshments and further planning for the membership campaign.

    • For a time after the birth of daughter Frances, the Moyers family lived in Robstown, Texas. A card, undated, from Iva Marie Dotson was sent to Frances there. As Pearl was listed in City Directories up until 1909 and in the 1910 federal census in Yellow Spring Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, it probably was soon after 1910. • There was (sic) exciting times at the Earl Moyers farm south of Newport recently when a bull attacked a team of horses. One horse was so badly gored that it had to be shot. Its mate was also severely injured. The bull had been locked up in the barn while P. A. Moyers, father of Earl, and Lloyd Patterson, the hired man were using the team in some work in the barn lot. The bull broke out of the barn and attacked the team, but did not attempt to molest the men.
