    • Mrs. Harriet Hamilton Is Laid to Rest.

      The funeral services of Mrs. Harriet Hamilton, whose death was noted in last week's News-Herald, were held from the home on Sunday afternoon (July 22, 1923), conducted by Dr. W. P. Nicholas, pastor of the deceased. The interment was in Elmwood cemetery.

      Harriet Harris was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Harris and was born at Jacksontown* county, Ohio, September 15, 1840, and was almost 83 years of age at the time of death, which occurred Thursday, July 19th* (1923).

      The parents came to Iowa when she was 11 years old, and settled near Morning Sun. She was married first to Joseph M. Joy at Wapello, May 18, 1860. To them was born a son and a daughter, E. H. Joy and Mrs. R. W. Bailey. Mr. Joy died in 1865, and the second marriage of the subject of this sketch took place in 1872, to Alexander Hamilton, in Louisa county. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton: Mrs. Olive Swartz, deceased; Mrs. Frank W. Hall of Lexington, Nebraska, Mrs. H. J. Cowgill of Bogalusa, Louisiana, Miss Nellie Hamilton, at home.

      Mr. Hamilton died at Bushnell, Illinois, in 1886, the family moving back to this community soon after.

      Mrs. Hamilton was a member of the Presbyterian church for a long time.

      The deceased also leaves a sister, Miss Rachel Harris; also four brothers, Thomas, Joseph, Newt, and George Harris, besides eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Joy Swartz, made her home with Mrs. Hamilton for several years past.

      The relatives called here for the funeral were: Dr. and Mrs. R. W. Bailey of Denver, Colorado, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Cowgill of Bogalusa, Louisiana, E. H. Joy of Westwood, California, John Swartz of Burlington.

Joy and then Alexander Hamilton, born in Ohio moved to Bushnell, Illinois.

      Children of Harriet & Alexander were Olive Rachel (Swartz), Ina May (Hall), Minnie (Cowgill), and Nellie Hamilton.

      Harriet's children by Joseph Joy were Edward Joy and Mary Elisabeth Joy Bailey.
