    • GIRL KILLED IN CRASH ON MARION HIWAY
Miss Selma Hoge, 18, Whittier Girl, Victim Of Accident

That stretch of road extending between Concord school and a point a mile east of Marion claimed another victim in an auto wreck Tuesday evening. [May 30, 1933]

Selma Hoge, 18, beautiful and talented daughter of and Mr. and Mrs. John Hoge of near Whittier, was the victim of the collision at 8:25 Tuesday evening, which wrecked two cars and injured four persons. Miss Hoge was riding with the others from Springville to the Carl White home, just east of Marion, in a car owned by Carl Headlee and driven by Donald White. Other passengers in the car were Alice Post and Lucy Harris. All were students of Springville high school.

The car was headed westward, and at a point about fifty yards past the junction of No. 13, started to go around another car. An eastbound machine, driven by W. B. Zuker, of Dubuque, and containing also Mrs. Zuker, was met at the same point. Zuker drove his car out onto the shoulder to avoid a collision, but White pulled the Headlee machine back to the right so quickly that the rear end swung to the left and smashed into the front end of the Zuker car.

      Crushed Chest

Miss Hoge, sitting on the left side of the rear seat, sustained a crushed chest, fracture of the left arm, deep cuts, and a crushed skull. White was thrown from the car, and when it stopped, still upright, one of the other girls was entangled beneath the front wheels, according to passing motorists.

The Zuker machine was badly damaged, but neither of the occupants was injured. Motorists took the injured persons to the office of Dr. Grayston, in Marion. Dr. H. N. Strader, a Marion veterinarian, who was passing the scene, took Hoge from the wreckage while she was still living, but by the time they reached Marion, Dr. Grayston stated that she was dead.

According to one story, the machine White meant to pass came out of Highway No. 13, and he did not have time to slow up, so was forced to go around. Another statement is that the car ahead had a dim tail light.

      Car Repaired

All the occupants of the car were cut and bruised, and White suffered an injury to his head which left him in a dazed condition for many hours.

Mechanics at the Service garage in Marion worked all night to repair the Zuker machine, and it was completed early Wednesday morning. Marion police cleared the highway and traffic was not held up very long.

Funeral services for Miss Hoge are to be at the Meeting House in Whittier, at 2:30 Friday afternoon. Interment will be made at Whittier. She was born in June 1915, and had spent all her life in the Whittier community. The Hoge place is two miles southwest of Whittier, and two miles northwest of Springville. Selma wan the eldest of seven children, and is survived by her parents, three brothers, three sisters, and a host of friends and more distant relatives. She was an unusually charming girl, sweet and high-spirited, and was a great favorite among her classmates. She was a member of the junior class of the Springville high school, and was a star player on the high school basketball team.
