    • About Baby Brother.
      Burlington, Iowa.

Dear Miss Morton: How are you these days? I am fine. I have a baby brother. He is just nine; months old. If you put a hat on his head he will bow his head and take it off. He will take his rattle and throw it on the floor. He likes to see you pick it up. It makes him laugh. I will have to close. But I will send a short story.

      Lovingly, EDITH KLEMM.

Edith Louise and Henrietta J. Klemm
Edith Louise and Henrietta J. Klemm
Edith and Henrietta Klemm were two of the daughters of Henry Klemm and Maria M. "Mary" Nantz. Their mother died in 1923 and their father was apparently ill by the mid-1920s. He died in 1928 of tuberculosis. Edith, Henrietta, their older sister, Hazel Marie, and their brother Robert Henry were all taken in by the aunt and uncle, their mother's sister and her husband, Julia and John Zurmuehlen. Robert was adopted by them. This photograph was taken in July 1929 at Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they had traveled with the Zurmuehlens, their brother, and cousin, Albert Nathaniel Wells, to visit a cousin and his family, Charles Duane Smith, a son of another sister of their mother's, Amelia (Nantz) Smith. I cannot ascertain which of the two girls is which from this photograph. Edith was about 15 at the time and Henrietta was almost 12.

The story of this photograph is one of very good luck and timing. While working on the descendants of Frederika Brumm, I was contacted by Kathleen "Kathy" (Zurmuehlen) Bray via a mutual friend, and she kindly provided this photograph of ten people precariously sitting atop a very large rock. Another friend helped me decipher the plaque on the lower right side of the photograph, and sent me to modern day pictures of people sitting atop this very same rock. It commemorates a Civil War battle and is on Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee.

I remembered a short newspaper clipping I had saved from The Burlington Hawk-Eye, dated July 7, 1929. It read: "Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Zurmuehlen and son, Robert, Henrietta and Edith Klemm, and Albert Wells left Saturday morning for an extended motor trip to Tennessee, where they will visit relatives." The relatives in Tennessee they were planning to visit, I assumed were the family of Charles Duane Smith (Charles, his wife, Emma, and sons, Duane and Dwight.) After thinking it over and comparing the travelers to the family in Tennessee, the ages of all involved, it seemed these were all the very same people in that article and in Tennessee who were descendants of Frederika (Brumm) and Fred Nantz.

I have surmised, with a high level of confidence, that the folks sitting on the rock are, from left to right: John William Zurmuehlen, Julie A. (Nantz) Zurmuehlen, slightly in back of them Robert Henry Klemm Zurmuehlen, Emma W. Smith holding Dwight Gardner Smith, Charles Duane Smith, Henrietta J. and Edith Louise Klemm (uncertain which is which), Albert Nathaniel Wells, and Duane M. Smith (note: in later years Dwight and Duane used the surname "McSmith").
