- Robert "Bob" D. Shafer, 56, of Wapello, died Monday, September 20, 1999, at his home.
Born August 7, 1943, at Monmouth, Illinois, he was the son of Clifton E. and Ethel L. Tucker Shafer. He married Opal M. Johnson on March 27, 1970, at Biggsville, Illinois.
Mr. Shafer attended Wapello schools and served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a loading foreman at U.S. Gypsum at Sperry for 36½ years.
He attended the Solid Rock Baptist Church and was a member of the Indian Hills Golf & Country Club. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, fishing and classic cars.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Darin Shafer of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Jay Shafer of Wapello; one daughter, Stacey Ann Schrader of Wapello; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford Shafer of Monmouth, Illinois, Ray Shafer of Biggsville, Illinois, and Richard Shafer of Wapello; and three sisters, Gloria Jaynes of Naples, Florida, Ada Reed of Burlington and Helen Hulen of Anchorage, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Shafer will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, with the Reverend Dan Doolin and Lane Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Wapello Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for the Wapello Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, Keck Memorial Library and Solid Rock Baptist Church.
