    Research
    • According to Adam Dotson, around 1915 the Oscar Brown Dotson family rented farms in Missouri and later near Clear Lake, Iowa (where son Bert was born). At the time of the 1915 Iowa state census (presumably January 1, 1915) they apparently were not in Iowa.

    • A photograph of Oscar, Edith, and their children exists. It may have been taken on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, which would have been in 1940.
    Research
    • A note from Marge Kimble regarding their marriage, as found in Louisa County marriage book: April 20, 1896: Oscar B. Dotson, age 19; Edith V. Baxter, age 18 (This would tend to indicate, based on birth dates, a 1900 marriage or possibly they lied about their ages.)

Verona Violet Dotson and a Brother, Probably William 'Boyd' Alison Dotson
Verona Violet Dotson and a Brother, Probably William "Boyd" Alison Dotson
Verona Dotson was probably about age four when this photograph was taken, which would have been in about 1910. The younger boy beside her is likely her brother, Boyd.

Verona Dotson was holding her baby brother, Homer, in this photograph taken in 1924. Homer died at age two, in 1925, in an accidental fire. Verona was married later in the year this photograph was taken to George Percy Walker.

Oscar Brown and Edith Virginia (Baxter) Dotson
Oscar and Edith were photographed in about 1945 in this picture. Another of them and their children exists from about the exact same time period, probably taken the same date as this photograph. I imagine this photograph was taken in Morning Sun, Iowa.

Oscar Brown Dotson and His Daughter, Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker
Probably taken in the late 1920s, this photograph of Oscar Dotson and his daughter, Verona Walker, appears to be in the fall, as the corn crop is dried in the fields and the leaves are off the trees. To my eyes, the old washtub at first appeared to be levitating, but it is sitting on a tree stump.

The Family of Oscar Brown and Edith Virginia (Baxter) Dotson
This family photograph of Oscar and Edith Dotson's family may have been taken in 1940, when they would have had their 50th wedding anniversary. I believe the children can be identified as follows. Front row, left to right: William "Boyd" Alison, Oscar, Edith (Baxter), Verona Violet Walker (who is slightly behind her mother, Edith) and Geneva P. Dotson on the right.

The back row, left to right, is: Theodore Roosevelt "Ted", Cleao R., Mark Jacob, Bert Kuttle, and Kenneth J. Dotson. (I am not certain about the order of the final three, but I listed them chronologically, which seems to match the indication of the ages of the people in the picture.)

Oscar's parents were Mark Dotson (1841-1926) and Martha Elizabeth Beir (1846-1927). He was the third of four children born to them. Brother Waldo died in 1880 at age four or five; his sisters were Gertrude D. Bailey (1868-1946) and Hallie Pauline Dotson (1889-1982). Oscar was born July 13, 1881, at Newport, Iowa, in Louisa County. He married Edith Virginia Baxter (1882-1967) April 20, 1899. Oscar died of an aortic aneuryism December 1, 1948. He and Edith were the parents of nine children, all of whom grew to maturity except Homer Leonard Dotson, who died at age 2 in an accidental fire. The other children of Oscar and Edith were: Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson (1902-1997), who married Zella "Myrtle" Walker; Cleao R. Dotson (1904-1973), who married Bessie Lokee "Bess" Sterling; Verona Violet Dotson (1906-2007), who married George Percy Walker; William Boyd Alison Dotson, who married Louice Charlene Edgar and later Vera E. McMeekan; Mark J. Dotson (1910-2005), who married Charlotte Effie (maiden surname unknown); Bert Kuttle Dotson (1915-200), who married Leuna Mae Delzell and later Loretta Mae Timmer; Kenneth J. Dotson (1919-1999), who married Ludmila "Millie" Kalmins; and Geneva P. Dotson, who married Lee. J. Gilmore.
