The Family of Charles Pearsey and Ruth Ellen (Fox) Walker, and Charles Francis Walker
The Family of Charles Pearsey and Ruth Ellen (Fox) Walker, and Charles Francis Walker
This photograph is the only known photo of Ruth Ellen (Fox) Walker and the only photograph (I have) of Charles Francis Walker. It was taken most likely in 1882; no later than 1883. Charles Leander "Lee" Walker, sitting on Charles Pearsey Walker's lap, was born May 1881. Flossie Zella Walker, the next child born to Charles and Ruth, was born in April 1884, when the family was living in Texas for a year (obviously she is not pictured), and Charles F. Walker remained with Francis S. Walker on the family farm when Charles and Ruth and their family were in Texas.

Despite what the writing on this photo says about Charles F. being an orphan, his father, Leander Walker, Charles Pearsey Walker's brother, was alive and living in Indiana when this photograph was taken. Leander's first wife, Olive née Walker (unrelated), died when Charles Francis was an infant; Leander sent his son to Iowa to be raised by the family. Leander remarried later and had three more sons.

Identification is as follows: Everna Ida "Vernie" Walker (later Frizzell) is standing on the left, Charles Pearsey Walker is sitting, holding Charles Leander "Lee" Walker on his lap. Charles Francis is standing to their left. Standing alone in front is Thomas "Tom" Walker, then Ruth Ellen (Fox) Walker, and standing on the right is Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker. This photograph was provided courtesy of Marge Kimble. It was in Flossie Russell's family archives.

The Charles Pearsey Walker Family (Original Page)
This is a page with the photo of Charles Pearsey Walker's family on it. Apparently Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell wrote the notes on the page, which are: "Parents - Ruth and Charlie Walker. Everna standing by Dad. Charles Leander on lap. Tom along side. Older boys Sam & Charlie Walker, nephew - their father died (sic: mother) so they came to stay with CP and Ruth."

I theorize this was a family photograph left to relatives about the time when Charles, Ruth, and their children moved to Texas for several years (Charles Francis remained behind, living with Francis S. and Catherine B. (Pearsey) Walker.

This photograph from between about 1915/20 is of the two daughters of Charles Pearsey Walker and Ruth Ellen Fox: Flossie Russell (1884-1968), who lived in Wapello, Iowa, married to John Franklin Russell (1882-1967) and Vernie Frizzell, (1873-1951), who married Elijah C. "Eli" Frizzell (1863-1934). Vernie lived in Clarke County, Iowa.

My grandaunts, Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell and Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell were enjoying a reunion or visit when this photograph was taken in about 1945. Vernie lived in Clarke County, Iowa, in the south central part of the state, and Flossie in Louisa County, Iowa, a county on the Mississippi River in the eastern part of the state.

This is a document featuring 65 generations of descendants of Godwulf (born circa AD 80) to Dennis Brumm. Through the Fox family genealogy, much of which was provided by researcher Jodie Streit, plus some research I did backing it out from the royal family of England (to which the Fox family is connected, including Norse legends which can never be proven, this is the furthest back my database goes. It is not posted to be taken as "fact" in the earliest of generations/ (Note: this document is in .pdf format.)

    • John and Flossie Russell's foster son was Byron Ernst, who was a first cousin once removed of John's. Byron's birth parents were Walter Carl Ernst (1875-1955) and Lila M. "Lily" Barrett (born 1878). Lily was a daughter of Orville and Louise Morse (Lovering) Barrett, and her mother, Louise, was a sister of Sarah Stacy (Lovering) Russell, who was John Franklin Russell's mother.

Byron Robert Ernst was one of three (known) children in his family. His brother Fred W. Ernst (1896-1975), and sister Gracie (Ernst) Schossow (born 1895) were the other children. Their birth parents, Walter and Lily Ernst, were married in 1894 and divorced before 1900. Walter remarried to Ella "Belle" (surname unknown), worked for the railroad, and lived in the western part of United States (Nevada, California). Lila remarried to J.M. Personal Recollection
    • (Personal memories of family researcher, Dennis Brumm:)

When I was young, Flossie and John Russell lived in the town of Wapello, Iowa, where they moved when they retired from their farm which also had been in Louisa County, Iowa. They had no electricity or running water, even into the 1960s when this was considered quite unusual for the region. The sink in the kitchen of their house had a hand pump which got water directly from their own well, and there was an outhouse in their back yard. For me, quite young at the time, this lack of modernity created a sense of adventure. I don't know what it might have been like living without the "modern" conveniences on a daily basis, but imagine I might have left my sense of awe behind rather quickly.

The Wedding Photograph of Flossie Zella Walker and John Franklin Russell
The Wedding Photograph of Flossie Zella Walker and John Franklin Russell
Flossie and John Russell were married Christmas Eve 1903 near Newport, Iowa, at the home of Flossie's father and stepmother, Charles Pearsey and Sarah Ann (Houseman/Edger) Walker. She was 19 and he was 21 years old. Her father's home was new and had recently been completed, the work done by carpenter, Sam Dotson (1858-1931).

The farmer on the tractor in this photograph is John Franklin Russell. Back a ways with either a large hat on her head or else a basket on her back is his wife, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell. They had no children, but raised a foster child, Byron Robert Ernst (1898-1975), who probably was the boy behind Flossie in the photograph. Byron later married Clara Elizabeth Walker.

1912 Walker Family Photos: In the Back Yard of Charles Pearsey Walker's Home Near Newport
One of a series of photographs apparently all taken the same summer day in 1912, this includes several family members who can be almost certainly identified and children who can be surmised. This photograph is from the back yard of the home where Charles Pearsey Walker and wife Sarah lived.

Standing, left to right in this photograph are: John Franklin Russell, Elsie Ella Walker, Maude Mae Walker, Hattie Mae "Harriett" Walker holding Hattie "Leota," and Flossie Zella Russell. Kneeling on the ground is Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker, holding a son who is probably Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker (age two at the time, and known as "Sammie" when he was young).

A Group of Men at Frank Walker's Farm
A Group of Men at Frank Walker's Farm
The farm of Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker was on the Iowa River. This photograph has been identified as having been taken at his farm. Frank was the son of Charles Francis Walker and Jessie Deborah Vaughn. Marvin Walker, Frank's son, has helped identify some of the people in the photo. Some were also identified by Marge (Walker) Kimble. The photograph is estimated to have been taken between 1938/43.

The two children in the back are unidentified. Otherwise, in the back row, left to right: Dale H. Walker, Unknown (possibly Carl Vaughn Walker or Byron Ernst), Earl Leander Walker, Unknown. Front row left to right: Charles Leander "Lee" Walker, Frank Walker, Charles "Cecil" Walker, John Franklin Russell. On the far right sitting on the grass is Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell

It seems likely the man second from the left in the back row would be Carl Vaughn Walker (Frank and Earl's brother) or Byron Ernst (John and Flossie's foster child and the husband of Clara Walker Ernst who was Frank and Earl Walker's sister); he also somewhat resembles George Percy Walker. The children playing in the background shadows could be Frank's two younger sons, Marvin and Dean Walker, but it is just too dark to tell whether or not that is the case. This photo was most likely taken after the start of World War II, although it is possible Cecil was in the service before the outbreak of that conflict and I based the earlier 1938 date upon how old Dale Walker seems to me.
The Children of Charles Pearsey Walker and Their Cousin, Francis Isaac 'Frank' Walker
The Children of Charles Pearsey Walker and Their Cousin, Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker
This is a reunion of some of the children of Charles Pearsey Walker and their spouses, and additionally the family of Charles P. Walker's grandnephew, Frank Walker.

Within this group of people, Millie was Jim (James G.) Walker's wife, Hazel was Frank Walker's wife. John Russell was Flossie's husband and Jennie Reil Hannah was Samuel Nathaniel Walker's wife. Sam, Everna (Frizzell), Flossie (Russell), Lee (Charles Leander), and Jim were Walker siblings. Frank Walker's father, Charles F. Walker, who was Francis Samuel and Catherine Pearsey Walker's nephew, was raised by Francis S. and Catherine because his own mother Olive died when he was only two weeks old. Therefore, the Frank Walker in this photograph was part of the immediate family even though he was a "first cousin once removed," and not technically another sibling.

In the very back: Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker. The two front rows, left to right: Thomas "Tom" Walker, James G. "Jim" Walker, Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker, Mildred Jane "Millie" (Beauchamp/Feldman) Walker, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, Charles Leander "Lee" Walker, Aleta Marie (Hewitt) Walker, Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell, Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker, John Franklin Russell, and Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell.

Everna Ida "Vernie" (Frizzell) Walker, with John Franklin and Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell
Vernie Frizzell is with her sister and brother-in-law, Flossie and John Russell, in this photograph probably taken about 1945, possibly as late as 1950 (Everna died in 1951). It was sent to my mother, Hattie "Leota" (Walker/Krekel) Brumm, by Everna Frizzell, probably at Christmas. On the back there is some writing from Everna that says: "Just the once happy trio on the Short art. I am not able to write a letter. Everna"

John Franklin Russell and Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell
John Russell was born September 9, 1882, in Fonda, Iowa; Flossie Walker was born April 18, 1884, in Tehuacana, Limestone County, Texas; they were married Christmas Eve, 1903, and lived their entire lives in or near Wapello, Iowa.

In the 1950s and 1960s they lived in the town of Wapello in a house that still had no indoor plumbing. A small pump provided water from the kitchen sink, and there was an outhouse behind their house.

    Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell
    Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell
Flossie Russell was the sixth of eight children born to my great grandfather, Charles Pearsey Walker, and his (first) wife, Ruth Ellen Fox. Flossie was born in 1884 when the family was in Texas. According to my aunt, Marge Kimble, she called herself "the yellow rose of Texas" because of this. She married John Franklin Russell on Christmas Eve 1903 near Newport, Iowa, at the family farm house of her father. Flossie and JOhn lived long lives. John (1882-1967) died at age 85, and Flossie died in 1968 at age 84. They had no children, but raised a foster child, Byron Robert Ernst, John Russell's first cousin once removed. Byron was later to marry Flossie's first cousin once removed, Clara Elizabeth Walker. (This photo was processed in August 1966)
Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell With a Bonnet
Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell With a Bonnet
I am not sure if this was just the fashion Flossie Russell wore in about 1930 when this photograph was taken or if the bonnet on her head was for some event that was taking place at the time (or possibly neither of those situations).
Several Family Members Round a Tree

Another photograph of what is probably this bench that encircles this fine shade tree exists with a very young Shirley Lea Broeker standing near it. The women in this photograph are, left to right: Flossie Zella Walker talking to Wilda "Marguerite" (Wyerman) Walker, whose back is turned to the camera. In the front are Hattie "Leota" Walker with her sister, Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, resting her head on her shoulder.

My educated guess was this photograph was taken in the summer of 1939, at the time of Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker's 70th birthday party.

A Family Reunion: Probably Between 1940-1945
A Family Reunion: Probably Between 1940-1945
The people who can be identified in this photograph the children of Charles Pearsey Walker - Everna Frizzell, Sam, Tom, and Jim Walker, and Flossie Russell. The three unknown men in positions 2, 8, and 11 appear almost to be brothers; they seem to have a strong family resemblance. Judging from their ages relative to the Walkers (almost contemporary it would appear), they seem unlikely to be the spouses and/or children of Everna and Eli Frizzell. It is possible some of the older unknown people might be Edgars. There are no Frizzells who fit the bill (see the one possible exception below).

Left to right: unknown child, unknown man, Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker, Thomas "Tom" Walker, Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell, unknown woman with sunglasses, unknown man, unknown woman in front, Mildred Jane "Millie" (Beauchamp/Feldman) Walker*, unknown man, James G. "Jim" Walker.

*The woman identified as Millie Walker also bears a resemblance to Talma (Frizzell) Lyon, the daughter of Vernie Frizzill.
Peggy Joan Frizzell with Her Great Aunt, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell
Peggy Frizzell was a passenger in this horse-drawn cart with her grandmother's sister, Flossie Russell, in this photograph probably taken about the time of the end of World War II. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.)

A Photograph from a Reunion of People from the Walker and Moyers Families
This is a family reunion photograph, taken in 1949, of members of the extended Walker family of my maternal relatives. Several members of the Moyers family are also in this picture.

Those identified and not in this photograph are: Charles Leander "Lee" Walker, his wife, Aleta Marie (Hewitt) Walker, an unknown woman (sitting in the chair), Hattie "Leota" (Walker) Krekel (standing), holding an unknown baby, but it likely was 3-month-old Steven William "Steve" Walker, Ruth Aralene (Wheeler) Broeker, a woman with her back to the camera, possibly one of the Moyers' sisters, Caroline Ellen Moyers, Ethel Louise Moyers, William David "Bill" Walker, Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, and Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell.

Flossie Russell was an avid gardener. This photograph of her sitting near some of her flowers, was taken between about 1949-1955.
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
This reunion was evidently in the autumn or spring, as evidenced by the coats everyone is wearing. Many of the unknown people in this photograph are probably from the Frizzell family. If so, this reunion was one that was periodically held in Ottumwa, Iowa, considered halfway between the Osceola area where they lived and the Morning Sun area where many of the Walker family lived. If before 1951, the woman between Flossie Russell and Sam Walker was probably their sister, Everna Frizzell (the #9 person). Other photographs of her wearing a similar hat (that obscures her face, unfortunately) do exist.

A second photograph, nearly identical to this one, exists as well and is posted on this site. Additionally a third photograph, side view, of women at the reunion, exists and is posted.

Known family members included in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), George Percy Walker (1896-1985), William David "Bill" Walker (1918-1977), Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957), Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner (1897-1970), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker (1894-1976), Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958), and Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson (1903-1990).
Women at a Walker Family Picnic
Women at a Walker Family Picnic
This photograph, taken by Robert Walker probably in summer 1956, was one of the annual Walker family picnics in Locust Grove Park, Morning Sun, Iowa. Those identified are back row, left to right: Leota Brumm, Margaret Walker, Reil Walker, the little girl on the left is unknown (as Bob Walker took the photo, perhaps it was his daughter, Janet), the girl on the right is Becky Kimble, Marge Kimble (face hidden), uncertain, and Flossie Russell. The front row on the blanket: Ruth Broeker, Beverly Marshall, Vera Virden, and Marguerite Walker.
Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell with Two (Unknown) Men
Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell with Two (Unknown) Men
My aunt, Marjorie Kimble, originally thought that the two men in this photo might be some of Flossie Russell's Frizzell kin, but probably not more than one of these men would fit that bill, and it seems he wouldn't be old enough for the picture. John Frizzell died in 1957 (and this photo was taken in 1962); Charles Frizzell was alive in 1962 but born in 1913. These men appear to be about the same age as Flossie, which indicates they must be from some other family. Possibly one could be Frank Walker's brother, Carl Vaughn Walker, but I really do not know.

A Photograph Taken at "The Cartwrights, October 22, 1944"
This is one of two photographs identified as having been taken on October 22, 1944, at the Cartwrights. The Cartwrights were Doris Daisy (Frizzell) Cartwright and Joseph William "J. W." Cartwright They are not in this photograph, however. The shorter girl on the front left is Beverly Jean Broeker, the woman in the middle is Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell, and the other woman and girl are unknown, although it might seem likely the girl on the right was Beverly Jo Cartwright, who was born in 1930.

Three Women Sitting in the Grass, One May Be Flossie (Walker) Russell

    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (2 of 3)
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (2 of 3)
This photograph is nearly identical to another photograph from this reunion, probably it was taken only moments after or before the first one that has been up online for a number of years. Known people are identified on it, please check it for who is who. Many people at this reunion are presently not identified. Lots of them are probably Frizzell family members.

People who are presently known to be in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), George Percy Walker (1896-1985), William David "Bill" Walker (1918-1977), Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957), Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner (1897-1970), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker (1894-1976), Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958), and Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson (1903-1990).
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (3 of 3)
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (3 of 3)
This photograph of a reunion that occurred sometime between 1950/53 was taken from a side angle as a group of women at the reunion were posing for another photographer, apparently.

The women who are presently known to be in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker (1914-1997), and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958),

The older woman wearing the hat is probably Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell (who died April 27, 1951). Many of the other family members are likely her descendants, as I believe this was at an annual or periodic Frizzell/Walker reunion, likely in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson and Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner were in the other two photographs from this reunion, but are not visible in this one.
