    • Eli Frizzell Dies Near Woodburn

Eli Frizzell, son of John O. and Eliza Webster Frizzell, was born in Louisa county, Iowa, October 21, 1863, and departed this life Friday evening August 10, at the age of 70 years, 9 months and 20 days. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birth and on February 26, 1891, was united in marriage with Everna Walker at Morning Sun, Iowa, where they made their home until the year 1896 when they moved to Clarke county where they had since made their home, with the exception of ten years in Decatur county.

They were the parents of nine children, three daughters, Helen, Bea and Birdie, preceding the father in death. There are left to mourn his death his widow, two sons, John and Charles, of Osceola, and four daughters, Mrs. Talma Lyon, of Alliance, Nebraska, Mrs. Ruth Sanders, of Weldon, Mrs. Doris Cartwright and Mrs. Lela Reynolds, of Osceola. Eleven grandchildren also survive.

[The] deceased was one of a family of nine children of whom four brothers and two sisters remain. His illness was of more than two years duration and for the past few months he has been lovingly cared for in the home of his youngest son. Nothing that willing hands and loving hearts could do was left undone to make his last days comfortable. It was the privilege of each of his children to help care for him and also to be present at his passing.

    The 'Walker Homestead'
    The "Walker Homestead"
Marge Kimble calls the house in the photograph the "Walker Homestead." It was the home of Charles Pearsey Walker in the 19th century, built in 1903 by Samuel Dotson (1858-1931). It was later the home of Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker when Charles moved to a smaller home on his property.

Several of the people in the photograph can be positively identified, and several others inspire some educated guessing.

The woman on the left, with the horse, by all rights should probably be Hattie Mae "Harriet" (Moyers) Walker. But she doesn't look anything like the other photographs of Hattie. At the moment she is an intriguing mystery. The man second from the left is Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker.

The woman sitting in the chair is Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell. I believe some of the four children are probably hers, and it would seem likely the man sitting with the youngest child is likely her husband, Eli Frizzell. By 1906, which is the date that was written on the back of the photograph, Vernie and Eli six children. Sam and Hattie Walker had seven.

The couple on the right in the back do not seem to match in any sense faces of people who are already identified.

Taken in about 1925, John F. Russell is standing with his two nieces, Lela on the left, and Doris on the right. Lela seems to have her own camera.
    General Newsprint Marion News
A short report that the families of Samuel Clinton Walker and William David Walker were attending a family reunion in Ottumwa, Iowa; Also that Jerry Dean Walker was leaving town to attend Southern Methodist University.

The reunion in Ottumwa, Iowa, puzzled me until I spoke to Marge Kimble regarding it. She replied that there were frequent reunions held in Ottumwa because the extended families of the Frizzells (mostly around Osceola and Woodbine, Iowa) and of Sam and Reil Walker (around Morning Sun and Wapello, Iowa) determined it was about a half-way point between the two regions of Iowa, saving traveling time that would be required if they were held in either of the actual locations. She also reckons that this reunion in 1955 was likely about the last one the two sets of family held in Ottumwa.

I imagine a number of photographs of family reunions that are posted here probably were taken in Ottumwa. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.)

A Birthday Card on October 20, 1910 (back)
From Charles Pearsey and Sarah Walker in Morning Sun, Iowa, to Eli Frizzell in Osceola, Iowa. On the top of the back of the card is written "W.O. 1210908, C.P.Walker" On the bottom of the card is written in a different pen, "Sample of Soldier Writing." This apparently was used to cash Charles Pearsey Walker's pension checks which he feared to cash when he was alive. The message on the card is, "Dear son, Hope you may have many more birth day (sic) and all your life may be filled with health happiness and prosperity, and that you will never forget your God who is the keeper of your soul. Affectionately, C. P. and S. A. Walker.
