    • L. D. Burgus, Finance Officer 22 Years, Dies

Louis D. Burgus, whose 11 terms as finance commissioner stand as a record for holding city council office here, died Sunday night (March 22, 1959) in a Cedar Rapids hospital. He was 74.

Retired as finance commissioner since 1953, Mr. Burgus had been hospitalized since suffering a stroke earlier this month. Death came at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Burgus first won the city's finance post in 1932. He was re-elected for 10 more straight terms, 3 times without opposition. His political career ended in 1953 when Mr. Burgus ran once too often, this time for mayor against ailing incumbent Milo J. Sedlacek. The late Mayor Sedlacek beat him, 11,821 to 2,084.

During his period in charge of city finances, the municipal budget grew from $1,200,000 a year to almost $6 million. The population increased from 48,000 to about 75,000. Physical assets of the city government more than doubled.

When Mr. Burgus bowed out, the city's bonded debt also stood, at $3,734,000 - only $434,000 more than it had been when he first came in.

Prior to his council service, Mr. Burgus was credit manager for the John Blaul's Sons Company, grocery wholesalers. He came to Cedar Rapids in 1914 and had been associated with the firm for 5 years previously in Burlington.

He was born June 27, 1884, on a Des Moines county farm and spent his childhood there. On October 4, 1911, he was married to the former Margaret Dreckmeier, who survives along with 2 sons, Donald and Louis, both of Cedar Rapids, and 2 brothers.

The Burgus home here is at 1523 Seventh ave. SE.

      Charter Member.

Mr. Burgus was a member of the First Lutheran church, a charter member of Mizpah lodge. No. 639, A.F. & A.M.; Iowa Consistory; KCCH; El Kahir Shrine; Modern Woodmen; Cedar Rapids Traveling Men's club, and United Commercial Travelers.

Services: Turner's at 1:30 Wednesday by the Reverend Theodore A. Youngquist and Mizpah lodge. Friends may call at the chapel until 1 p.m. Wednesday as the casket will not be opened after the service.
