      Special To The Hawk-Eye Gazette.

      Mediapolis (IA), September 13. -- Private funeral services of William Burgus, who died at a hospital at Mt. Pleasant Sunday at 4:45 p.m., will be held at the home at Sperry Wednesday at 2 p.m., with services to follow at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Benton township at 2:30 o'clock.

      Reverend R. R. Belter of Burlington will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

      The body is now at Fry funeral home. Mediapolis, and will be taken to the residence Tuesday afternoon.

      Mediapolis (IA), September 14. -- Funeral services of William Burgus, a resident of Des Moines county 75 years, who died at Mt. Pleasant Sunday afternoon, will be held at the home at Sperry Wednesday (September 15, 1937) at 2 p.m. additional services to follow at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Benton township at 2:30 o'clock, Reverend R. R. Belter of Burlington officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He was one of the oldest members of the church.

      Mr. Burgus was born in Germany, April 20, 1853, and came to this country when nine years old. With his parents he settled on the farm on which he resided until the time of his death.

      He was married to Margaret Brumm June 21, 1877. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Charles E. of Sperry, Iowa; L. D. of Cedar Rapids; Harry A. of Burlington, and Mrs. Morris Schmidt of Sperry, Iowa; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; also a sister, Mrs. Charles Schuler, Sperry.

      Two sons, W. F. and Fred E. Burgus, and three grandchildren preceded him in death.

    • Louis Burgus' Father Dies At Mediapolis At Age 84

      Louis Burgus, commissioner of finance, was called to Mediapolis, Iowa, Sunday by the death of his father, William Burgus.

      Mr. Burgus, Sr., died Sunday at 4:45 p.m., and was buried from St. Paul's Lutheran church, Benton township, Des Moines county, Wednesday afternoon, This passing culminated an active life of 84 years, the majority of which was spent on his farm near Mediapolis, where he moved with his parents when he was only nine years of age. He is survived by his widow and two other sons, Charles and Harry, and a daughter, Mrs. Morris Smith.

      Ed Stefan, park commissioner, and Wes Benesh, commissioner of public safety, attended the funeral services Wednesday afternoon. One service was held at the home at 2 p.m., the other in the church, at 2:30. Burial was in the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Louis Burgus and two sons also attended the funeral.

    William A. Burgus
    William A. Burgus was born April 20, 1853, in Berlin. He was one of (at least) six children born to Friedrich H. and Henrietta "Henriche" (Wagner) Burgus of Prussia. The family immigrated to the United States in 1861. They settled first in Des Moines County, Iowa, which is in southeast Iowa, and later branches of the family spread to Clarke County (south central) Iowa as well. William married Margaret Brumm, the daughter of Charles "Carl" and Eva Juliana "Julianna A." Osswald Brumm on June 21, 1877, in Kingston, Des Moines County, Iowa. They had six children and both lived long fruitful lives for their era, William dying in 1937, Margaret in 1946. Both are buried at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Des Moines County.
