      Joe Nienhaus, 110 South 6th, will observe his 90th birthday on Wednesday (March 3, 1954), with a quiet celebration at home. Born in Germany in 1864, he came to this country and settled in Burlington when he was 16 years old. He is a retired employee of the Chittenden and Eastman company, where he was a furniture crater for over 35 years.

    Johann Joseph "Joe" Nienhaus was born March 3, 1864, and died March 3, 1954, one day after the date of this birthday announcement. He immigrated to the United States in about 1880.

    • Joseph J. Nienhaus, 90, of 110 South 6th, died Friday (November 26, 1954) at 5:45 p.m. at St. Francis hospital after a short illness.

      He was born March 3, 1864, in Germany. In 1881 he came to Burlington with a brother, John. He had worked at the CB&Q shops and for 35 years at Chittenden & Eastman company. In 1885 he married Christine Haller. She died in 1913. October 11, 1920, in Kahoka, Missouri, he married Fannie Robbins.

      Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Ed Sutton of Santa Ana, California, and a son, Ralph, of Burlington. He also has a sister in Germany. His parents, a brother and two sons are dead.

      Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Wallen's chapel. The Reverend M. E. Lehmann will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

    • Although a daughter Christina was listed on the 1885 Iowa state census, she is not accounted for in the total number of children her mother had given birth to in the 1900 or 1910 census. Also her birth date of about 1882 seems earlier than her parents' wedding date, so it is assumed this was an enumeration error listing her in 1885.
