    • Fire Truck Takes Chief To Grave
The last run for John C. Lox

Gladstone (IL) -- The old fire chief's last request had been that his ride to graveside be on a fire truck.

And so it was that the body of John C. Lox, 76, a native of Gladstone who had served as chief of the West Burlington fire department from 1924 to 1958, left Gladstone on a fire truck bound for the Oquawka, Illinois, cemetery Wednesday morning.

      Mr. Lox died Monday.

Mr. Lox joined the West Burlington fire department in 1916 and was appointed chief in 1924. He retired in 1958.

      Bought New Truck

In 1928 the community held a fund drive and bought a shiny new Graham Brothers fire truck, the department's first motorized truck.

That truck, not so new any more, carried the chief from the home of his brother, Lawrence Lox, in Gladstone, to Oquawka cemetery.

Pallbearers were members and former members of the department. They included active members Robert Lawson, who is acting chief, Warren Kester and Dale Broeker, and honorary members Wilbur Siegel, Art Swander and Les Heald, West Burlington Mayor Chester Mason rode in the funeral procession with the pallbearers.
