We have all thought that Andrew Carnegie had supplied just about every town in Iowa which needs one with a freepublic library, but the town of New London, in Henry county, did not have one and, when Henry Nugen, a resident of that place, died on the fourth of the present month (sic: January 4, not February 4, 1935), it was found that he had left a will in which he directed that all of his, estate, estimated at $50,000 except three small bequests be, given to that town for the establishment of a library which is to be called after his name. It will be enough to endow such a library as few towns of 1,500 in Iowa have Just a few days before this a Miss Mary Crew, a resident of the village of Salem, in the same county, had left property valued at $12,000 for the establishment of a library at that place.

The death notice of Henry J. Nugen. The town library in New London, Iowa, was named after its major benefactor, Henry J. Nugen, a bachelor farmer who lived nearby and died in 1935. Henry was one of two children born to Richard Nugen (1841-1900) and Priscilla Wright (1850-1929). His only sibling was Hannah E. (Nugen) Leedham (1870-1934), the wife of Charles E. or "C. E." Leedham. (Though not technically a death notice, this article serves the purpose of being a death announcement for Henry.)
