    • It's Cold, But There's Plenty to Do

[...] Celebrating continued throughout February for Everett and Dorothy Burkhiser of rural Middletown. The Burkhisers observed their 45th wedding anniversary February 8. Their children and families joined them for the day February 7 to celebrate the anniversary. In the morning, the couple and two of their daughters and families celebrated together by attending services at Danville United Methodist Church. Sharing this service with the Burkhisers were Ruth and Gordon Holze and sons, Scott, Ryan, Isaac and Paul, Dunlap, Illinois, and Janet Williams of Cedar Rapids. Later they were joined by the other daughter and family, Norma and Clark Whitaker and children, Will, Jenna and Kelcy of Hillsboro.

The family enjoyed an anniversary dinner at Sirloin Stockade in Mount Pleasant and later met at the Burkhiser home for cake and punch, and photos. On February 10, the Burkhisers gathered with other relatives in Columbus Junction for a double celebration, their anniversary and to celebrate the 90th birthday of Dorothy's mother, Esther Richardson of Crawfordsville. (Esther reached that milestone on February 11.) The dinner was held at the home of Dorothy's sister and husband, Helen and William Edwards. Also attending were her brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Pauline Richardson of Crawfordsville.

Wednesday, July 2d, was the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hannah of this city, so the event was celebrated with a wedding dinner on Sunday last, which was attended by forty-six relatives.

The dinner was planned by Mr. and Mrs. Hannah, aided by their five daughters and served by the grandchildren. Preceding the two-course dinner a Tom Thumb wedding took place, with Doris Hickenbottom as the bride, Floyd Richardson us the groom, Robert Walker as the minister, and Helen Richardson as the ring bearer; Lois McDowell presided at the organ. During the afternoon a program was enjoyed consisting of a short sketch of Mr. Hannah's younger life by his sister, Mrs. Jennie Pichard; Miss Ruth Courter, sister of the bride, read a poem of her own composing telling of the bride's courtship; playlets were given by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and music interspersed the program.

Miss Courter presented the happy couple with numerous gifts from the guests. The oldest guest present was an uncle of Mrs. Hannah, Henry Lee of Winfield, and the youngest was Jimmie Hickenbottom, Jr., a great grandson.

Those present at this happy celebration were: Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Hannah, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hannah, Mrs. Jennie Pichard (sic), Mrs. Catherine Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. S. Ogg, all of Mt. Pleasant; Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Courter, O. E. Courter and son Wayne, Henry Lee and daughter Ruth of Winfield; Miss Ruth Courter of Frenchburg, Kentucky, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. McDowell, Rex, Robert and Lois McDowell of New London; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Richardson, Dorothy, Helen and Floyd Richardson of Mt. Pleasant; Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Walker, Johnnie, Margery and Robert Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Verle Van Houten and Ronald; Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Hickenbottom, Ella Mae, Harlan and Agnes Hickenbottom, Mr. and Mrs. James Hickenbottom and Jimmie, Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Oakley, and the guests of honor.

Mr. and Mrs. Hannah went to housekeeping near Mt. Pleasant and resided near that place until they moved to Morning Sun about twenty-eight years ago, where they engaged in the grocery business until several months ago when they retired from active business life.

The Hannahs have five daughters, seven grandsons, nine granddaughters and two great grandchildren.
