    The Hawk Eye 
    • Ivan G. Jacobs of Stronghurst, Illinois, will observe his 80th birthday with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 16, in Fellowship Hall of the Stronghurst Methodist Church.

      He was born June 20, 1922, in Stronghurst to Martin and Jeanette Jacobs. He married Kathleen Swanson on June 15, 1947. She is deceased.

      He attended rural Henderson County schools and was a graduate of Biggsville High School. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific Theater.

      He owned and operated Jacobs Plumbing and Heating and Jacobs True Value Hardware stores in Stronghurst and Oquawka, Illinois. He now farms.

      All friends and relatives are invited to attend the reception. For those unable to attend, cards may be sent to Box 14, Stronghurst, IL 61480.

    The Hawk Eye 
    • Ivan G. Jacobs, 84, of Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Roseville Country Manor, Roseville, Illinois.

      Born June 20, 1922, in Stronghurst, he was the son of Martin and Jeanette McCartney Jacobs. On June 15, 1947, he married Kathleen Swanson. She died March 4, 1994.

      Mr. Jacobs farmed all of his life near Stronghurst and Biggsville, Illinois. He owned and operated Jacobs True Value Hardware Store and Jacobs Plumbing and Heating, both for many years in Stronghurst.

      He was a World War II veteran of the Marine Corps. He was a member of Stronghurst United Methodist Church, Biggsville American Legion and Henderson County VFW.

      Survivors include one brother, Sidney Jacobs of Mesa, Arizona; nieces and nephews.

      Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

      Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

      The funeral for Mr. Jacobs will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stronghurst United Methodist Church. Burial with military rites will be in Biggsville Cemetery.

      A memorial has been established for Stronghurst United Methodist Church.

      Biggsville (IL) -- Miss Kathleen Swanson and Ivan Jacobs, both of Biggsville, were married at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, June 15, in the Methodist church at Biggsville. The double ring ceremony was read by Reverend P. L. Powell before an altar decorated with a bouquet of gladioli and lighted tapers in twin candelabrum. Miss Lorena Downs of, Biggsville was pianist, and accompanied James Smith, Biggsville, who sang "Because," and "Always." The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Swanson, and the bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Martin Jacobs, all of Biggsville.

      Serving as maid of honor was the bride's sister, Miss Pauline Swanson, and bridesmaids were Mrs. Harold Icenogle, Galesburg, sister of the bride, and Miss Mary Deal, Champaign, Illinois. Franklin Jacobs, Biggsville, served his brother as best man, and Robert Seymour, Biggsville, and Oscar Davis, Media, were ushers. The guest book was in charge of Mrs. Franklin Jacobs.

      The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white nylon and a fingertip veil held by a halo of white net and satin bows. She wore a strand of pearls, gift of the bridegroom, and she carried a single orchid upon a Bible. The maid of honor wore pink marquisette and carried a pink Colonial bouquet, and the bridesmaids were attired in blue gowns and carried blue colonial bouquets. The bride's mother wore a teal dress with luggage tan accessories and,the bridegroom's mother was attired in a jersey dress with white accessories.

      Summer flowers decorated the church parlors where the reception was held. The bride's tablet featured a 4-tiered wedding cake with miniature bride and groom, and lighted tapers. Mrs. Robert Whitlow, Oquawka, Miss Veda Rehling, Burlington, Mrs. Wayne McGaw, Dallas City, and Mrs. Helen Johnson, Biggsville, assisted.

      The couple left for a 2-week trip through southern states. The bride wore a 2-piece blue linen dress. They will live near Biggsville, where the bridegroom is engaged in farming.

      Mrs. Jacobs attended Roseville and Stronghurst high schools, and was graduated from Blackburn college. She has been a primary teacher at Oquawka for the past 3 years, and will continue teaching. Mr. Jacobs, who attended Biggsville high school, served 34 months overseas with the USMCR.

    Bill and Pauline Brumm were married July 15, 1972, in Stronghurst, Illinois, at the home of Pauline's sister and brother-in-law, Ivan G. and Kathleen I. "Kathy" (Swanson) Jacobs. The wedding party consisted of those four people and myself, Dennis William Brumm. I was living in Ames, Iowa, at the time.
