      Five apprentice electricians who have completed training will be honored tonight at 7 p.m. at a barbecue at the Round Top on Highway 9.

      Vernon Taylor, Verl Van Houten, Chester Zablocki, Ralph Fuller and Charles Haddick will receive the certificates of apprenticeship completion awarded by the U. S. Department of Labor.

      The awards will be made by W. D. Lowe, president of the Gulf Coast Chapter, National Electrical Contractor's Association.

    Verl Van Houten was a native of Minnesota, born April 28, 1918. He was raised in the vicinity of Ida Grove, Iowa. Verl's parents were Homer Preston and Evelyn Dorothy (Johnson) Van Houten. He married Viola Belle Walker in 1940 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. They moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, and settled there, having four children. Verl died June 26, 1991.
