    • DeWitt woman dies in Saturday accident

McCausland (IA) -- A DeWitt woman was killed and her husband seriously injured as the result of a Saturday afternoon accident west of McCausland.

Scott County sheriff's deputies said 71-year-old Beverly Marshall died in the single-vehicle accident in the 20500 block of 300th Street.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department reported that a truck driven by 74-year-old Elwood Marshall was driving his pickup truck westbound on 300th Street. The truck, which was pulling a small trailer, left the south side of the roadway and went into an embankment of a small creek.

Deputies said Beverly died as the result of the impact, while Elwood was taken to Genesis Medical Center East Campus.

Deputies believe that Elwood may have fallen asleep behind the wheel when the accident happened.

The accident remains under investigation by the Scott County Sheriff's Department's Accident Response Team.

    Beverly Jean "Bev" (Broeker) Marshall
Bev Marshall was one of two daughters born to Wallace Ernest "Wally" Broeker and his first wife, Ruth Rebecca Walker. Her mother died when Beverly was six. Beverly married Elwood Baird "Oddie" Marshall in Morning Sun in 1954. He is the son of Gilbert Conrad "Gib" and Opal Pauline (Baird) Marshall. Bev and her husband were involved in an automobile accident on September 4, 2004, in Scott County, Iowa, in which Beverly was killed. She left behind a daughter, Karen Ruth (Marshall) Hutchinson, and a son, James A. "Jim" Marshall, and a number of grandchildren.

This was probably taken in 1935 or 1936 near or before the birth of Bev's sister, Shirley. The same dog, or one that looks very similar, is in several photographs in which Hattie "Leota" Walker was bathing the animal and puppies she apparently had.
Beverly Jean Broeker Standing by a Ladder
Beverly Jean Broeker Standing by a Ladder
Although it does appear that Beverly Broeker is solely responsible for this ladder's upright balance, and it seems that it might collapse if she moved, I imagine it is resting on some extended tree branches the photographer neglected to include in the picture.

This photograph could have been taken in any number of several small, southeast Iowa towns, but likely it was in Morning Sun, Wapello, or possibly New London. It is a photograph in a town rather than on a farm.

Although a bit difficult to discern due to the levels of shading and contrast, Beverly is holding a small puppy in this picture. On the back of the photograph is written, "To Bert Thomes, From Beverly Jean Broeker, Taken December 31, 1936."

At this time, Bert Thomes was involved with my mother, Hattie "Leota" Walker, which explains how my mom came to have this photograph that was ostensibly for him.
