    • JOHN LEICHT PASSES AWAY
      Lifelong Resident of Burlington Died At His Home Shortly After Midnight

      John Leicht, 77, well-known lifelong resident of Burlington, died at his home, 822 Sycamore street at 12:05 o'clock this morning after several months illness. He underwent an operation last fall but failed to recover his health.

      Mr. Leicht was born in Burlington, March 20, 1857, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Leicht, who came here from Germany. He was married here April 20, 1878, to Caroline Lucas, who died six years ago. Mr. Leicht operated a grocery store here for more than 50 years, receiving his first experience in the business as a boy of 13. He was a number of First Christian church and the Hawkeye Natives society. His main Interest was his business and most of his time and energy were devoted to the successful operation of his store, in which he was active up to the time of his last illness. His hobbies were baseball and fishing and he was especially fond of his grandchildren. He was one of the few remaining old time grocery men still in business.

      He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. H. Avis of Burlington, two sons, John Leicht, Jr., of Burlington and B. H. Leicht of Des Moines; two brothers, Frank Leicht and George Leicht of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Emma Hassman of Ft. Madison; three grandchildren, Chester Avis of Burlington, Neal Leicht of Watsonville, California, and Marian Leicht of Des Moines; and four great grandchildren, Lois, Jeanette and Carol Leicht of Watsonville, California, and Gaylen Leicht of Des Moines.

      Funeral services will be held at the residence, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in charge of Reverend A. T. Browning, pastor of First Christian church, with burial In Aspen Grove cemetery. The body will be removed to the residence from Unterkircher's funeral home tomorrow morning.
