    • Burlington lawyer Gene Krekel has been named Des Moines County chairman for George W. Bush's presidential campaign.

"Gene has been working very hard on my behalf, and he is a valued asset to my presidential effort," Bush said in a statement Monday.

Krekel is with the law firm of Hirsch Adams Krekel Putnam and Cahill.

He said Bush has an excellent shot at winning the county in the January 24 Iowa caucuses, despite a strong and sustained organizing effort by GOP challenger Steve Forbes.

"We're looking forward to doing well in Des Moines County," Krekel said.

He cited the large turnout for a Bush campaign stop in Burlington earlier this month.

"The comments we have gotten back are extremely good," Krekel said.

He noted that many of those who supported former President George Bush, the Texas governor's father, are participating in this campaign.

In addition, he said, "the new people are learning quickly."

Construction at the Gear Avenue entrance to Southeastern Community College has not caused any major headaches for fair promoters.

The construction has closed the Gear Avenue entrance to any thru traffic and limited access to the Des Moines County Fair grounds to the only other entrance, off of Agency Street.

"It has been an irritation, but it's not causing any big problems," Gene Krekel, fair board president, said. "If that is the biggest problem, we've got a problem-free fair."

Krekel made it clear that the college is not to blame for the inopportune construction or for it not being completed in time for the fair.

"The college did everything possible to try to remedy the situation, but there was just nothing they, or we, could do about it," Krekel said. "We were both assured it would be done."

Krekel said only minor adjustments have had to be made to accommodate the construction.

"We just have to be a little more careful about our traffic direction this year," he said.

    • Des Moines County Fair opens gates tonight for seven-day run.
      By Gretchen Cleland

West Burlington (IA) -- The 2001 Des Moines County Fair is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

The fair kicks off at 7 p.m. this evening in Southeastern Community College's Loren Walker Arena with the Fair Queen Pageant and runs through Tuesday morning, when it will wrap up with a livestock auction.

This year's fair will not only offer all the traditional events and shows, but an expanded list of family-oriented activities.

"We have really expanded the family activities this year," Gene Krekel, fair board president, said. "There are still all of the traditional activities, but on the weekend we've added more things to attract families -- especially those with pre-teens and pre-4-H-age children."

The weekend roundup of family activities on the fairgrounds next to the college includes a magic show, kid's crafts, chainsaw carving, a fireworks display Saturday night and a performance Sunday evening by the band Elm Street 3rd Floor.

"This is the first year we've had a band," Krekel said. "From what I understand, the band is made up of a group of 15-year-olds and they're quite popular with that age group."

Pony rides for the younger kids are also a new addition to this year's fair. Krekel said pony rides will be available for kids Thursday through Monday.

This year's fair also features the return of chainsaw art on Sunday afternoon. Artists will carve at 1:30 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. They will auction off their work at 6:15 p.m.

Krekel does not expect the added events this year to detract from the true meaning of the fair -- the 4-H and FFA shows and events.

"Our entries are very solid in the 4-H division," he said. "We have a recent high as far as numbers."

Krekel said the fair board thought they might have to put up an extra tent to house all of the exhibits this year, but eventually managed to fit everything in the space they already have.

"We've definitely got more kids involved this year, and that's great," Krekel said. "We've seen an increase in involvement from kids in urban areas as well as rural this year."
