      Morning Sun Lions members Don Callahan and Robert Brown were honored at the Lions' annual Valentine Supper last Wednesday. Callahan and Brown received recognition at the Iowa Lions District 9x4 convention on February 9 when they became the district's nominees for the Bud Lise Leadership Award and Ralph Whitten Service Award presented annually by the Iowa Lions. Callahan received his nomination from both his extensive leadership at the local, district and state level and his leadership in the Morning Sun community. Brown, who resides in rural Oakville, received his nomination for long term service as a Lion and for his service to his home community. The state winner will be announced at the Iowa Lions State Convention in June.

    The Hawk Eye 
    • Donald Wayne Callahan, 77, of Morning Sun, died Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

      Born June 23, 1930, in Burlington, he was the son of Fred and Vera Swanson Callahan. On May 22, 1948, he married Esther Dougherty in Garland.

      Mr. Callahan was a farmer and an Amoco Fuel Agent and later a co-owner of ServiceMaster by Callahans. He graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1947. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church at Morning Sun, having served as a deacon and elder. He was a member of Morning Sun Lions Club and was a past district governor, serving in 1989 and 1990. He was active with the Lions Blood Drive. He also was a member of Wapello Masonic Lodge, Community Betterment Committee and was a former city council member of Morning Sun.

      Survivors include his wife, Esther; two sons, Adrian "Bud" Callahan of Frisco, Texas, and Dennis Callahan of LeMars; three daughters, Teresa Kessell of Baltimore, Maryland, Melodee Walker of Burlington, and Tamara Nelson of Morning Sun; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Larry Callahan of Chester, Massachusetts.

      He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.

      Visitation with family will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun.

      The funeral for Mr. Callahan will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church at Morning Sun with the Reverend Mel Miller and Ramona Wink officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Elmwood Cemetery at Morning Sun.

      A memorial has been established for First United Presbyterian Church, Morning Sun Lions and Great River Hospice.

      Morning: Sun, Iowa, September 15. - Fred M. Callahan, son of T. J. Callahan, northeast of Newport, and Miss Vera M. Swanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Swanson of this place, were united in marriage at the St. Paul's M. E. church parsonage, the Reverend A. F. Ludwig of Burlington officiating, Tuesday.

      They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell whose home is east of Newport. The bride was dressed in a gown of blue silk crepe. She is a graduate of the local high school, class of '26, and has always lived on a farm west of Morning Sun until the past year; when her parents moved to Morning Sun.

      Mr. Callahan is an industrious young farmer.

      They returned Tuesday evening to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Dotson south of Newport. They will make their home for the present on the T. J. Callahan farm.
