    • Lyle Howard Bickford, age 92, of Wapello, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, October 17, 2007, at his home. The son of James Preston and Olive Emmaline Schildberg Bickford, he was born October 11, 1915, at Thornburg. He married Wilma A. Isett on September 28, 1937, at St. Louis, Missouri. She preceded him in death on June 2, 2002.

      Mr. Bickford graduated from Wapello High School in 1934. He worked for farmers until 1935. In 1935 through 1936 he worked for Olson Construction Company. He then worked for Johnson Motor Company until 1940. On March 11, 1940, he started work for McNeil Brothers as a mechanic. In June of 1944 he joined the army as a PFC in the 9th Division of the 39th Infantry Company A. On February 14, 1945, he landed in France and on March 13 he was hit by an 81 German mortar shell and was hospitalized for nine and a half months. He received 156 stitches and a cast from the waist down. He was released from the hospital on December 26, 1945, in Topeka, Kansas. While in the military, he received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Metal, Rifleman's Badge, European theater Operation Combat Infantry Badge, American Theater Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Ribbon. He then returned to work at McNeil Brothers in January of 1946 where he remained until 1973 when the shop closed. In 1973 he went to work for the City of Wapello as a street maintenance mechanic. Lyle went to work for the Farmers Elevator and Exchange in 1976 where he remained until retirement on April 1, 1980.

      He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 5166 of Wapello and the DAV. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Muscatine and the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Wapello. He was a past member of the Eagles and Elks Lodges of Burlington.

      He enjoyed dancing, boating, hunting, and woodworking. Lyle enjoyed being with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed fishing and camping with his grandsons. In later years he also enjoyed his great grandchildren.

      He is survived by his two daughters, Jo Ellen Molle and Kay and Richard Matthews both of Wapello; his three grandsons, Jeff Molle and family of Burlington, Luke Molle of Lone Tree, and Mason Matthews of Wapello; his two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; his parents; a granddaughter; four brothers; and four sisters.

      The funeral ceremony for Lyle Bickford will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2007, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166.

      Friends may call from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m..

      A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department, the Wapello Rescue Unit, and the Wapello Community Ambulance Service.
