- Victim of Accident Dies in Hospital
Boyd Brumm, Hit by Stump Puller April 22, Succumbs to Injuries.
Boyd William Brumm died at the at the Burlington hospital Monday evening from injuries sustained when a stump puller handle hit him on the leg on April 22. At the time of the accident he was pulling stumps on his farm in Benton township. A chain on the stump puller broke, and the lever, flying back, struck his left leg just above the knee, badly shattering the bone and tearing the flesh.
Amputation of the injured leg might have saved his life, but in his weakened condition, his physicians feared that the shock of the amputation would have been too great for him. The wounded leg became infected and poisoned his system, causing his death.
Mr. Brumm was forty-three years old and was the son of William and Helena Brumm. He was born in Benton township, near Kingston, May 14, 1878. He received his education at the Piney Woods school and the Denmark academy.
He married Miss Eleanora Schuler on January 19, 1910. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Schuler. Since he left school he has been a farmer and has lived In Benton township all his life with the exception of three years.
Besides his wife he leaves his mother, Mrs. William Brumm, of Benton township; four brothers, Leslie T. and Burton Brumm, of Burlington; Clayton Brumm, of Mediapolis, and Byron Brumm, of Ft. Madison, and one sister, [Mrs.] Charles Freedman, of Mediapolis.
The arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.

 | A Wedding Anniversary Photograph of William and Helena Vandalia (Thomas) Brumm This photograph of my great grandparents was probably taken in about 1898 at the 25th wedding anniversary of William and Helena Brumm (they appear older than 24 and 19 years old, respectively).
William and Helena were married April 1, 1873. They farmed in rural Des Moines County, Iowa, near the town of Kingston. They raised seven children. A biography of William, his family, and Helena and some of her family, was written in 1905 in the book, A Biographical Review of Des Moines County, Iowa. |

The back of the original card lists the second son from the left as Clayton Brumm, but it was incorrect, and the correction was made by Clayton's son, Dale Brumm. |

19 Jan 1900 |
Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa [23] |
- This date is probably wrong; their ages on the Iowa marriage record would indicate the marriage was 1910, not 1900. And since there is a second record indicating that the marriage was in 1910, that seems even more likely.
