    • William J. "Bill" Murphy, 71, of 124 34th Street Drive SE, died Thursday, June 13, 1996, in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Memorial services: 1 p.m. Monday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, by Monsignor Robert Hogan of St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.

      Survivors include his wife, Mary Kay; two daughters: Lona Sedlacek and husband Jim and their daughters Sarah and Amanda of Marion; and Kathy Murphy and son Beau Roberts of Minneapolis; four sons: Pat and wife Becky and their son Brian of Cedar Rapids; Tom and his daughters Elizabeth, Katherine, Caroline and Claire of Lincoln, Nebraska; Robert and wife Barbara of Cedar Rapids and Jay and wife Ann and sons Drew and Quinn; and a sister, Patricia Dwight, of California.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Jack.

      Bill was born November 9, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, to J. Fred and Margaret Raftery Murphy. He married Mary Kay Nelson on September 7, 1946, in Des Moines. He was general manager of the Mount Vernon Ford Company from 1964 to 1979 and since 1979, was a realtor, more recently with Skogman Realty. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.

      Bill loved to garden. He was a loving husband, devoted dad and took special joy in his grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established.

    • Raftery - Murphy

      The marriage of Miss Margaret Raftery and John Frederick Murphy took place at 9 a.m. today in St. Patrick's church, the Reverend D. J. Lenihan officiating.

      At the entrance of the bridal party Mrs. Charles Keil played the wedding march from Lohengrin and during the offertory, Miss Agatha McDonnell sang "Ava Maria." The bride was gowned In blue charmeuse with [a] hat of blue and her corsage bouquet was of bride roses. Her bridesmaid was her sister Miss Florence Raftery, whose gown was of beaver-colored charmeuse with hat of black beaver. Her corsage bouquet was of pink buds. The best man was Thomas L. Murphy of Eagle Grove, a brother of the bridegroom.

      A three course wedding breakfast was served in the home of the bride after the ceremony. Pink and white were the decorations. Only the immediate families were the guests.

      The bride is the daughter of Mrs. P. Raftery, 1400 A avenue west. The bridegroom is with the O'Meara clothing company. They will take a short wedding trip and will be at home at 402 South Twenty-third street after November 15.
