    • Wm. Copeland was born in Londonderry, Jefferson (sic) county, Ohio, February 21, 1826, and removed with his family to Iowa in January 1867, and settled in Morning Sun, where he resided up to the time of his death, which occurred on the morning of January 26th, 1888.

He was twice married. First, October 19th, 1848, to Sarah C. Vance, who died in 1853, leaving three children, two of whom preceded the father to the better land, one being a son, killed by accident in Kansas but a short time prior to the death of his father. November 10th, 1857, Mr. Copeland was again married to Harriet Ann Jarvis, who, with their three children, one son and two daughters, still survive him.

The son, Wood, is married and lives in Morning Sun. The eldest daughter, Mary, is now the wife of T. J. Umphrey. Caroline, the younger daughter, is at home with her mother.

His only surviving child by his first marriage is married and lives at Stewart, Kansas.

At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the 126th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served till the close of the struggle. He united with the M. E. church in 1855, and died in the hope of a blessed immortality.

Those who knew him best, knew him as a faithful, earnest and consistent Christian, and an upright, honest man. Mr. Copeland held the office of justice of the peace for several terms, and held other local positions of trust and honor.

The funeral services occurred at 3 o'clock p.m. at the Methodist church, on Friday, and were conducted by the pastor, Reverend J. H. Armacost, assisted by Reverends McKelvey, Trumbull and Cooper. The remains were escorted to the cemetery by the members of Blake Post, G. A. R., of which deceased was a member, and the ceremonies at the grave were conducted by them.
