    • Civil War Veteran is Dead at Wapello

      Wapello (IA), March 18 -- S. F. Small, a veteran of the Civil war and well known in this city passed away Tuesday noon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Meyerholz, where he had been cared for during his last sickness which extended over many months.

      Mr. Small was born in Chittenden county [Vermont], November 6, 1844, and in 1863 enlisted in Company K, 7th Vermont Infantry, and soon after the close of the war came to Louisa county to make his home. He settled on a farm near Wapello and after engaged in farming for many years moved into Wapello.

      On June 24, 1867, he was married to Miss Eliza Umphries [Umphrey or Umphreys], who preceded him in death. Three sons, and two daughters survive; Dr. Sherman Small of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Ida Vines of Council Bluffs; James G. of Westwood, California; Mrs. Nora Meyerholz of Wapello, and Chester of Roulean, Saskatchewan, Canada.
