(Photo of Glenn Cline, and Tom Umphrey)

[...] Perry Beedle, a scrappy wingman, has fought his way up from the reserve ranks and will hold down Burton Yates' end post. The other new man, Tom Umphrey, speedy senior half-back, has been outstanding in recent practice and won the right to start in one of the halfback positions left vacant when Bill Hollen was injured.

      Draws Praise

Umphrey's all-around playing has drawn much comment from coaches, teammates and bystanders and local fans who have seen him in practice look for him to add the much needed spark to Winterset's offense.

Coach Herman Clark will probably start Perry Beedle and Harry Hamilton at ends, Bob Breen and Nick Schoenenberger at the tackles, Ray Brock and Glen Cline at the guards, Charles Abrahams at center, and Wilkinson, McNamara, Ray Breen and Umphrey in the backfield.

Geoffrey Paul and Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey, and Their Daughters, Thelma Verlee and Margretta Mae Umphrey
Geoffrey Paul and Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey, and Their Daughters, Thelma Verlee and Margretta Mae Umphrey
Margretta, the baby in this photograph, was born in December 1920, so likely the picture was taken in the summer of that year. Her older sister, Thelma, was age 3. Geoffrey and Maude would also have two sons, Tommy and Paul. Geoffrey died in March 1931.
    Four Generations of 'Walkers'
    Four Generations of "Walkers"
Thelma Verlee Umphrey was the baby in this photograph probably taken in summer of 1917. She is being held by her grandfather, Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker. Her mother, standing between the men, was Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey. And Thelma's grandfather, Charles Pearsey Walker, was standing on the right of the photograph.

Walkers and Umphreys and Two Unknown Babies
Several of the children in this photograph from the time period about 1926/28 are identified, but the two youngest children in the front are not identified for sure.

The back row of children are Thomas Samuel "Tom" Umphrey, Thelma Verlee Umphrey, and their aunt, Ruth Rebecca Walker. Tommy and Thelma's sister, Margretta Mae Umphrey, is the middle child in the front row. It is possible the child on the right is Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey, but I cannot tell for sure, and it seems that he might be a little older looking (he is only two years younger than Tommy). The babies could be children of Sam and Reil Walker, children of George and Verona Walker, or as well a child of Ted and Myrtle Dotson or Ross and Vinnie Walker, or Cliff and Marguerite Walker.

Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey Sr., Thomas Samuel "Tom" Umphrey, and John Franklin Russell With a Horse
At first look, the horse in this photograph looked to me like a "miniature camel." That would have been a local topic of conversation, if it were true. John Russell is obviously showing Tubby and Tommy Umphrey the ins and outs of the young horse's behavior.

The Four Children of Maude Mae Walker and Geoffrey Paul Umphrey
These are the two daughters and two sons of Maude and Geoffrey Umphrey. Margretta Mae Umphrey is the shorter girl in the back; Thelma Verlee Umphrey is the taller girl in the family. The brothers, left to right, are Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey and Thomas Samuel "Tom" Umphrey. This photograph was likely taken in 1927 or 1928.

The Families of Geoffrey Paul and Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey, Gorge Percy and Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker, And One or Two Other Children
It appears Geoffrey and Maude Walker and children went on an excursion with George and Verona Walker one day in about 1929 or 1930.

The four Umphrey children are all pictured in this photograph. Although it would seem logical that the children in the front row are Vera, Jean, and Mazie Walker, the children of George and Verona, it cannot be, as their daughter, Jean, was born after the death of Geoffrey Umphrey in 1931.

It does seem the little girl on the right is George and Verona Walker's daughter, Mazie, but the two children in the front left could be any number of family members, or even family friends. One may possibly be Vera, but this does not seem clear to anyone who has studied the photograph.

Other possibilities, considering people who lived in or near New London, Iowa, at that time, would include Clifford Walker's children or Myrtle Dotson's children; at this time George and Verona Walker as well as Maude and Geoffrey Umphrey did live in New London.

This may be one of the last photographs taken of Geoffrey before his unexpected death after surgery in Mt. Pleasant Hospital on March 9, 1931.

The single chimney in the center of the roof of the house behind the boys indicates they may have been standing in the back yard of what is called "The Walker Homestead," the farmhouse where Charles Pearsey Walker and later Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker lived.

Residences of Maternal Family Members in New London, Iowa During the 20th Century
I constructed this map of my home town of New London, Iowa, and noted the residences where various family members connected to the maternal Walker family lived during my lifetime in the town. I since have determined the location of another family earlier on, Geoffrey Paul and Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey, who were living in New London for a few years before Geoffrey's death in 1931. Using census data from the 1930 federal census, I believe it was six houses directly north of our family's home on South Pine Street (also on South Pine).

There were other family members, more distantly connected, living in town during the years I was there, but I was not completely aware of these connections at the time I undertook this exercise.

Christmas, about 1954, in the Tom and Helen (Collingwood) Umphrey household in Michigan. The doll looks to me to be one of the kind one could bottle feed with water and then change its wet diapers.

Carol seems ready to go roller skating in this photograph with her sister, Sandy. The standard metal skates that came with a tightening key that people of my generation had in the 1950s/1960s are now probably collector's items almost old enough to make the Antique Road Show.

According to Tommy's daughter, Carol Kelley, a social night of poker was never far behind when these men would get together during the 1950s and 1960s in Michigan. This was probably taken close to 1960; a few years earlier Roy was not yet wearing glasses in any of the family photographs
