    • WAPELLO WOMAN DIES SUDDENLY ON SUNDAY
Funeral of Mrs. Sarah Stacy Russell Will Be Held at 2 O'clock This Afternoon.
      Special To The Hawk-Eye.

Wapello (IA), November 24. -- Mrs. Sarah Stacy Russell passed away at her home in Wapello Sunday (November 22, 1925). She was born in the state of Illinois June 17, 1854, and had reached the age of 71 years, 5 months, and 5 days at the time of her death.

She was married to John Russell in the year 1873 and their union was blessed with eight children, three dying in infancy, and Elijah on March 16, 1925. Four are left to mourn: William of Colome, South Dakota; John, Arthur, and Mrs. Mary Maddux of Wapello. She also leaves ten grandchildren and a host of friends, who mourn the passing of this good woman. The husband died during their residence in Pocahontas county, leaving the mother with five children. They later moved to Wapello, which place has since been their home.

Funeral services will be held from the First M. E. Church today at two o'clock, conducted by Reverend O. E. McPride, and burial will be made in the Wapello cemetery.
    Research
    • Sarah's 1925 Iowa state census information listed her parents as George Lovering and Mary Thom, both of New Hampshire. Both names are in error.

It is a fairly certain bet her birth was in Sublette Township, Lee County, Illinois, where her family was living by 1860. There is a small town of Sublette within the township; it lay about half way between the Quad Cities (Iowa/Illlinois) and Chicago, and is relatively close to (a bit south of) Dixon, Illinois.
    Research
    • Sarah Lovering's parents were born in New Hampshire per the 1900 census; they were from Massachusetts according to the 1910 census. Sarah was married to Henry Bentz and was using the last name Bentz in 1900; in 1910 he was gone (dead or left) and she was listed as Sarah "Russell" again.

    • Iowa Marriage Records at Family Search report a marriage date of February 13, 1877, in Pocahontas County, Iowa (which they apparently obtained from a list of Pocahontas County, Iowa, vital records). As this was a few years after the birth of son, Arthur, it seems possibly to be in error. Sarah Russell's obituary stated she and John Russell were married in 1873.

    • Russell, John, brother of Henry, in 1870 built a sod house on his own homestead and occupied it alone for several years. In 1876 he built a frame house and married Sarah Lovering. He continued to occupy the homestead until 1883 (sic: 1889), when he died, leaving a family of five children, Arthur, William, Elijah, John and Mary. Two years later (1891) their mother became the wife of Henry Bentz, and they now live in the southern part of the state.

Wapello Woman Dies Suddenly on Sunday; Funeral of Mrs. Sarah Stacy Russell Will Be Held at 2 O'clock This Afternoon
The obituary of Sarah Stacy (Lovering) Russell (Bentz). Sarah Lovering was the daughter of Elijah Lovering Sr. and Louisa M. Morse. They were New Englanders who transplanted to Illinois, where Sarah was born on June 17, 1854. Some of the Lovering family ended up moving to Pocahontas County, Iowa, in and near the town of Fonda, and in this new state Sarah married John Russell (1839-1889), an immigrant farmer from England who had made his way to Pocahontas County with other family members via Ontario, Canada. Their marriage was probably in 1873. Eight children followed, but John died at age 50 August 1, 1889. Sarah remarried to Henry Bentz on October 10, 1891, in Rockwell City, Iowa, and they and her children moved to southeast Iowa, settling near Wapello, in Louisa County. The second marriage soon broke up and Sarah reverted to using the surname Russell from her previous marriage. She remained in Wapello, and died there November 22, 1925.
