    Carolyne (Johnson) Lett
Caroline Lett, my 2nd great grandmother, or "Carolyne" as it is apparently misspelled on this card, was born in 1824 in Sweden and died in 1904. She's buried in Des Moines, County, Iowa, in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery that is located in Huron Township. Caroline was the wife of Charles H. Lett. They apparently had nine children, two of whom may have died in infancy. Caroline doesn't look particularly happy with her photographic experience in this picture, but likely this is the face of a 19th century woman who had led a very hard life more than a comment on her contentment. When the Lett family first arrived in Iowa in about 1849 or 1850, they used the surname "Anderson." I have found them in 3 censuses as Andersons: in 1850 near Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa; and in the Iowa state censuses of 1854 and 1856, both in Burlington Township, Des Moines County. It was not unusual in the 19th century for Swedes, who used a patronymic naming system, to use assorted surnames during the course of one's lifetime.

The Death Notice of Caroline (Johnson) Lett
Caroline Lett was born Caroline Johnson (or more likely "Jansdotter" is what it would have been in Sweden) on July 16, 1824, in Sweden. She married Charles H. Lett in 1849 in Sweden, and crossed the Atlantic to the United States almost immediately. Their son, John A. Lett was born during the journey. In 1850 they were living in Jefferson County, Iowa, using the surname Anderson (Swedish surnames are a very difficult proposition to follow as they used patronymic naming conventions until 1901). They soon settled in Huron Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. Caroline had 9 children, seven of whom grew to adulthood. She died in 1904.
