    • Charles Lett died at Burlington hospital last evening after an illness of nine days, an influenza victim. He was born in Mediapolis nineteen years ago and was employed at the Marquardt motor cycle establishment on North Main street. He is survived by the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lett, 1316 North Sixth street, and a sister, Mrs. Bertha L. Brumm, of Mt. Pleasant. The funeral will be held Monday, with short services at the home, and regular services at the Kossuth church at 2 o'clock, with interment in Kossuth cemetery. He had won many friends here who will mourn his early death.

    Personal Recollection
    • (Recollections from Dale Brumm to his sister, genealogist Lorma (Brumm) Allen:)

You probably don't remember or ever knew Charlie Walker, but he told me about working with uncle Charles Lett and why the Letts moved to Burlington.

Uncle Charles Lett and Charlie Walker were working together at the cabbage farm (we remember this as the Luckenbill Pond and Farm). Charles had a motorcycle and one of the cousins in Burlington (probably one of the Page girls) invited them to come to Burlington for the weekend. While giving the girls motorcycle rides one of them leaned wrong and caused them to lose control and they hit a tree. No one was hurt but the cycle was damaged.

Charles talked to a place that sold motorcycles and he was told that he could use their tools, but they did not have a mechanic. He decided to stay in Burlington the first of the week and make the needed repairs. Charlie Walker told him he would take the train back to Mediapolis and go back to work at the farm. Charles (Lett) asked him to tell his folks (Walter and Ella Lett) that he would be home later in the week. While Charles was working on his cycle, the dealer talked him into working for him as their mechanic and he accepted.

Charles went to Mediapolis to get clothes and tell his parents he was going to work in Burlington. I don't know how long before the parents decided they would move there too, since they did not like the separation.

The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
The Wedding Photograph of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
This photograph was provided courtesy of Dale Hubert Brumm. Walter and Ella Lett were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. In my own possession is a wedding certificate with photographs of them. Walter does not have a mustache in that photo and Ella would seem to be a bit older, so perhaps they were photographed later for their wedding certificate.

The Marriage Certificate of Walter Theodore and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett
Walter and Ella Lett were two of my paternal great grandparents. They were both first generation Swedish children born to immigrant parents in the Mediapolis, Iowa, area. They were married March 16, 1892, in Burlington, Iowa. A wedding photograph that exists at that time shows Walter with a mustache and Ella looks to be a bit younger than she is on this photograph, so perhaps they "published" their wedding certificate a few years after the marriage.

Bertha, my grandmother, is pushing the baby carriage with her brother, Charlie in this photograph. Someone, likely my father, wrote "Charlie -- Mom" on the picture. The back of the photograph identifies "H. E. Sewell" as the photographer. Likely this was Harry E. Sewell, who was a neighbor of Hannah (Honson) Johnson, the children's grandmother, in 1900.
