And a third name exists as well. On the birth record of her twins in 1882, she was Hannah "May."

    • Email from Henrietta Johnson: In the 1910 census, call # 1240, Roll T624-400, State, Iowa, County, Des Moines, Township, Yellow Springs, Enumeration District 27, Hannah, Bam, and Howard are listed. In this census, Hannah's year of immigration was stated as 1875. It also lists the town of birth in Sweden of Hannah's parents. Bam lists the town of birth in Sweden of both Hannah and Samuel. Unfortunately, I am unable to make them out. Hannah's place of birth sort of looks like Jenthogl, but I haven't had a chance to check it out.

Note: the 1900 federal census says immigration was in 1869, which would make all children born in Iowa. This sounds more likely as it matches with Ella's dates elsewhere.

Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson and her Children
In about 1910 my paternal Johnson family decided to pose for a family portrait. This features my second great grandmother, Hannah Marie Johnson, and her grown children. In the back row left to right, were Nettie Marie (Johnson) Paddock, Sophia May "Sophie" (Johnson) Page, and Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett. In the front row, Hannahs sons were Frank Robert Johnson on the left and Bamford Freddie "Bam" Johnson on the right. Hannah is wearing traditional Swedish costume. Henrietta (Thomson) Johnson kindly provided this photograph for use.

    Hannah Johnson With "the Drapes"
This photograph of Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson, posing by fine cloth of the day, was likely taken during the 1880s. Hannah was the wife of Samuel Edmond Johnson, and the mother of ten children, including my great grandmother, Ella Matilda (Johnson) Lett.

    Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson
Hannah Honson, born July 18, 1845, in Sweden, married Samuel Edmond Johnson in 1866, in Sweden. They immigrated to the United States soon after the wedding, and were the parents of ten children born in the U.S., five of whom lived into adulthood. Hannah's husband, Samuel, died in 1892. She continued to live in a small house near Kossuth, Des Moines County, Iowa, until her death in 1915. Hannah, who was my second great grandmother, was the mother of Ella Matilda Lett (1870-1930, who was my great grandmother, Sophia May "Sophie" Page (1873-1939), Johnny Johnson (about 1877-1880), Frank Robert Johnson (1879-1930), Bamford Freddie "Bam" Johnson (1883-1971), Viola Johnson (died as a young child or infant, 1883/4), Nettie Marie Paddock (1895-1963), and at least two and probably three other children who died as infants: Mandy and Albert Johnson, and an infant or infants whose name(s) is/are unknown.

My second great grandmother, Hannah Marie (Honson) Johnson (1845-1915), is wearing the traditional Swedish clothes from her homeland in this photograph. Another photograph of her exists with her children, which appears to have been taken the same day. It was in a private home, perhaps her house in Iowa near Kossuth, Des Moines County.
