Reil and Sam Walker by Their House

A Map of the Area With the 'Walker Homestead' in Louisa County, Iowa
A Map of the Area With the "Walker Homestead" in Louisa County, Iowa
The "Walker Homestead" refers to the home built by Samuel Dotson (1858-1931) for Charles Pearsey Walker and his second wife, Sarah Ann (Houseman/Edgar) Walker, finished in 1903. The small village of Newport is a few miles southeast of where the home was. Samuel Nathaniel Walker and his families lived there as well until the 1930s. The house was torn down, probably in the 1960s or at the latest in the 1970s.
The Sons of Samuel Nathaniel 'Sam' Walker in July 1929
The Sons of Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker in July 1929
July 24, 1929, was Sam Walker's 60th birthday, and several photographs are dated as being from that month and year were likely taken at his birthday celebration in Morning Sun, Iowa. The sons are, back row, left to right:

George, Samuel, Paul, Cliff, and Ross Walker; front row, left to right: Bill and John Walker. The ages of these men and boys in this photo are:

George Percy Walker, age 33, married with two children

Albert "Ross" Walker, age 29, married with two boys; his wife Vinnie was pregnant with Lela, who was born September 10.

Thomas Clifford "Cliff" Walker, age 27, married with two children.

Paul Moyers Walker, age 24, married to Cora "Belle" (Hannah) Walker at this time, but they would divorce within about a year.

Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, age 19; William David "Bill" Walker, age 11; and John Henry Walker, age 5. John was the son of Samuel Nathaniel and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker. The other men and boy's mother was Hattie Mae "Harriet" (Moyers) Walker.

These are the first three children from the marriage of Samuel Nathaniel Walker and his second wife, Jennie "Reil" Hannah. The photograph was taken in the front yard of the Walker farmhouse near Newport, Iowa. The house was built for Charles Pearsey Walker in 1903 and remained in the family until the farm was lost during the Depression of the 1930s.

This photograph was probably taken during football season in autumn 1933 (possibly 1932), and is the family of Sam and Reil Walker. They are in the back, daughter Viola Belle and son John Henry Walker (holding the football) are the middle children, and Robert Charles and Marjorie Naomi "Marge" Walker are in the front.

The Children of Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker
This photograph, probably from about 1934, features the four surviving children of Sam and Reil Walker (daughter Rosalie Reil died soon after birth): in the back row are John Henry and Viola Belle Walker. The front are Robert Charles "Bob" and Marjorie Naomi "Marge" Walker.
Samuel Nathaniel 'Sam' Walker, His Wife, Jennie 'Reil' (Hannah) Walker, and a Birthday Cake
Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker, His Wife, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, and a Birthday Cake
Sam and Reil Walker had a yearly birthday party which was attended by many "extended" family members. Reil's birthday (July 20) and Sam's (July 24) were only four days apart, so one large party sufficed for both, according to their daughter, Marge Kimble. This photo, based upon the approximate dates of other photographs of the two, seems to have been taken by 1935 or so. It is not positively taken at their birthday party rather than that of someone else, but very possibly so. Careful examination has not given me any insights as to who the women sitting at the table behind them might have been.
    Walker Children and an Umphrey
    Walker Children and an Umphrey
These are the children of several related families. In the back row is Viola Belle Walker, apparently a tiny bit of someone who is hidden, and Margretta Mae Umphrey on the right. The middle row are Marjorie Naomi Walker and her brother, Robert Charles Walker, and then sisters Mazie Ella Walker and Vera Marie "Jakie" Walker. The little girl on the front left is Jean Louise Walker, the sister of Mazie and Vera. Margretta Umphrey and Mazie, Vera and Jean, are first cousins. Viola, Robert and Marjorie, though the same ages or even younger, and the aunts and uncle of the other children.
A Group of Extended Walker Family
This photograph from about 1939 features, left to right, back row: Doris Idella Walker holding Shirley Lea Broeker, Mazie Ella Walker, and on the right Marjorie Naomi Walker. In front of Marjorie, pointing forward, is her brother, Robert Charles Walker. The two girls in the fron are Jean Louise Walker, and Beverly Jean Broeker. Doris, Mazie, and Jean Walker, and the Broeker girls are all first cousins. Marjorie and Robert are a half-aunt and half-uncle to the others. At some point during the Depression in the 1930s, Sam Walker lost the family farm to the banks (this happened to both of my grandfathers). The family afterward rented a home and farm North of Morning Sun, Iowa, of which this became the family house.

This is the farm house where Sam and Reil Walker and children lived north of Morning Sun, Iowa, during the 1930s and 40s. Later they retired to live in town (Morning Sun).
The Children of Charles Pearsey Walker and Their Cousin, Francis Isaac 'Frank' Walker
The Children of Charles Pearsey Walker and Their Cousin, Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker
This is a reunion of some of the children of Charles Pearsey Walker and their spouses, and additionally the family of Charles P. Walker's grandnephew, Frank Walker.

Within this group of people, Millie was Jim (James G.) Walker's wife, Hazel was Frank Walker's wife. John Russell was Flossie's husband and Jennie Reil Hannah was Samuel Nathaniel Walker's wife. Sam, Everna (Frizzell), Flossie (Russell), Lee (Charles Leander), and Jim were Walker siblings. Frank Walker's father, Charles F. Walker, who was Francis Samuel and Catherine Pearsey Walker's nephew, was raised by Francis S. and Catherine because his own mother Olive died when he was only two weeks old. Therefore, the Frank Walker in this photograph was part of the immediate family even though he was a "first cousin once removed," and not technically another sibling.

In the very back: Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker. The two front rows, left to right: Thomas "Tom" Walker, James G. "Jim" Walker, Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker, Mildred Jane "Millie" (Beauchamp/Feldman) Walker, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, Charles Leander "Lee" Walker, Aleta Marie (Hewitt) Walker, Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell, Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker, John Franklin Russell, and Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell.
Samuel Nathaniel 'Sam' and Jennie 'Reil' (Hannah) Walker in the Park
Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker in the Park
This photograph of Sam and Reil Walker was probably taken in about 1941. Although the location isn't certain, I imagine it was in Locust Grove Park in Morning Sun, Iowa, where their birthdays were celebrated every July.
A Walker Family Reunion in About 1946
A Walker Family Reunion in About 1946
Based upon the ages of those who are children in this photograph, it was likely taken in about 1946. Several family members helped in its identification (I am a bit unsure about several of them). This photograph was provided courtesy of Carol Ann Kelley. Several persons could not be identified positively due to their placement or the overall quality of the photograph, and one child does not seem to fit at this date with family members, but generally it is correct.

Those who were at this reunion were: Gerald Wayne Kimble, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker, Leonard "Max" Dotson, Elaine Ida (Brown) Dotson, Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson, (Probably) Paul Eugene "Paulie" Umphrey Jr., Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey Jr., Lois Ann (Thibodeau) Umphrey, Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, Wilda Maxine (Walker) Thomas, Wilda "Marguerite" (Wyerman) Walker, Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, William David "Bill" Walker, Doris Idella Walker, Thomas Clifford "Cliff" Walker, Mazie Ella Walker-Belles, Unknown (Possibly Vera Marie "Jakie" Walker), David Floyd "Dave" Howey, Margretta Mae (Umphrey) Howey, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell, Ted L. Belles, Jerry Dean Walker, Gary Lynn Walker, George Percy Walker, Robert Charles "Bob" Walker, John Franklin Russell, (probably) Jean Louise Walker, Carol Sue Belles, and Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker.

Sam and Reil Walker were visiting their daughter's family, that of Viola Belle (Walker) and Verl V. Vanhouten, in about 1948 when this photograph was taken probably on the beach at Corpus Christi, Texas.
    Reil, Sam, and Elsie Walker
    Reil, Sam, and Elsie Walker
This photograph was apparently taken soon before or after another one of Elsie and Sam in the same outfits. Left to right, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker, and Elsie Ella Walker. I believe this was in the backyard of Sam and Reil's home in Morning Sun, which they moved into in 1949. Probably Elsie returned for the family birthday celebration that July

Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) and Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker in About 1950
The year 1950 for this photograph of Reil and Sam Walker is a guess based upon other photographs, their apparent ages, etc.
The Home of Samuel Nathaniel 'Sam' and Jennie 'Reil' (Hannah) Walker in Morning Sun, Iowa
The Home of Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker in Morning Sun, Iowa
This photograph, probably taken in fall or winter, was the view of the back side of the home in which Sam and Reil Walker lived in Morning Sun, Iowa, from 1949 until their deaths. They both died when I was 4 and 5 years old, so my personal memories are a bit weak of the home, but I do believe somewhere here in the backyard was an old inner tube tied with a rope to a tree branch that kids used as a swing.
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
This reunion was evidently in the autumn or spring, as evidenced by the coats everyone is wearing. Many of the unknown people in this photograph are probably from the Frizzell family. If so, this reunion was one that was periodically held in Ottumwa, Iowa, considered halfway between the Osceola area where they lived and the Morning Sun area where many of the Walker family lived. If before 1951, the woman between Flossie Russell and Sam Walker was probably their sister, Everna Frizzell (the #9 person). Other photographs of her wearing a similar hat (that obscures her face, unfortunately) do exist.

A second photograph, nearly identical to this one, exists as well and is posted on this site. Additionally a third photograph, side view, of women at the reunion, exists and is posted.

Known family members included in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), George Percy Walker (1896-1985), William David "Bill" Walker (1918-1977), Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957), Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner (1897-1970), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker (1894-1976), Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958), and Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson (1903-1990).

    A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (2 of 3)
This photograph is nearly identical to another photograph from this reunion, probably it was taken only moments after or before the first one that has been up online for a number of years. Known people are identified on it, please check it for who is who. Many people at this reunion are presently not identified. Lots of them are probably Frizzell family members.

People who are presently known to be in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), George Percy Walker (1896-1985), William David "Bill" Walker (1918-1977), Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957), Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner (1897-1970), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker (1894-1976), Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958), and Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson (1903-1990).

Sam and Reil Walker in Their Backyard
Sam and Reil Walker in Their Backyard
My mother cherished this photograph as it was one of only several pictures she had of her father and stepmother, Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker together, and the only one taken in color. Taken in Morning Sun, Iowa, Sam is holding a sunflower in his hand, and it is not clear to me if the flower bed near them is of roses or large impatiens. Roses would have seemed more likely as I remember the flora of the day. The photo was developed in November 1955, so it probably was taken in the summer of that year. Sam died in 1957, and Reil died in 1958. This so resembles another photograph (in which Sam is holding a sunflower) that was taken by Robert Charles "Bob" Walker, I imagine this was also taken by him.
    Reil Walker and Her Children
    Reil Walker and Her Children
This photograph of Reil Walker and her adult children was taken in Morning Sun, Iowa, in about 1956, by the side of Reil's home. It is of Robert Charles Walker (photo provided courtesy of him), Viole Belle (Walker) Van Houten, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, and Marjorie Naomi "Marge" (Walker) Kimble.

This photograph, taken in about 1956, is of a young Becky Ruth Kimble sitting on the couch with her grandparents, Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, at Sam and Reil's home in Morning Sun, Iowa. It was taken and provided by Robert Walker in about 1956. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.)

The Deer Head Trophy On the Wall
One of the dim memories I have of visiting the home of my grandfather and step grandmother, Samuel Nathaniel "Sam and Jennie "Reil" Walker, in the early 1950s was of a mounted deer head protruding from their wall. At about three years of age, things with big eyes that appear to be staring at you regardless of where you stand or sit in a room are very likely to get your attention more than parents begging you to be nice and quiet down. Dead and preserved animals with large eyes are always a tad spooky. Well, the trophy head of this animal is still in existence, at least as of 2001, when Marge Kimble provided this photograph, I believe from her son Trev Kimble Jr.'s basement. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.)

Paul drew a room on the front of the Christmas postcard to Sam and Reil Walker in Morning Sun. The photo is of a stand alone heater in a room, a man, presumably his father, sitting in a chair reading the Wapello Republican News (newspaper), his feet perched on the heater. It said Merry Christmas, and HOme on the Range.
