Sam and Betty Walker in Michigan

A Walker Family Reunion in About 1946
A Walker Family Reunion in About 1946
Based upon the ages of those who are children in this photograph, it was likely taken in about 1946. Several family members helped in its identification (I am a bit unsure about several of them). This photograph was provided courtesy of Carol Ann Kelley. Several persons could not be identified positively due to their placement or the overall quality of the photograph, and one child does not seem to fit at this date with family members, but generally it is correct.

Those who were at this reunion were: Gerald Wayne Kimble, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker, Leonard "Max" Dotson, Elaine Ida (Brown) Dotson, Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson, (Probably) Paul Eugene "Paulie" Umphrey Jr., Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey Jr., Lois Ann (Thibodeau) Umphrey, Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, Wilda Maxine (Walker) Thomas, Wilda "Marguerite" (Wyerman) Walker, Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, William David "Bill" Walker, Doris Idella Walker, Thomas Clifford "Cliff" Walker, Mazie Ella Walker-Belles, Unknown (Possibly Vera Marie "Jakie" Walker), David Floyd "Dave" Howey, Margretta Mae (Umphrey) Howey, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell, Ted L. Belles, Jerry Dean Walker, Gary Lynn Walker, George Percy Walker, Robert Charles "Bob" Walker, John Franklin Russell, (probably) Jean Louise Walker, Carol Sue Belles, and Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker.

A Family Reunion in 1988 at the Home of Shirley and Larry Smith (1 of 2)
This is one of two group photographs that exist which are provided courtesy of Marge Kimble of family members who attended a reunion in 1988 at the home of Shirley Lea (Broeker) and Norton Lawrence "Larry" Smith in Wapello, Iowa.

These people were: standing, left to right: Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, Wallace Ernest "Wally" Broeker, Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, and Marjorie Naomi "Marge" (Walker) Kimble

Sitting, left to right: Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Doris Daisy (Frizzell) Cartwright, and Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson. It looks a bit as though someone may have been obscured behind Sam Walker, next to Wally Broeker.

From Samuel Clinton "Sam" and Elizabeth Ella "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, visiting their son, Jerry Dean Walker in Berlin, Germany, to William Lett and Hattie "Leota" (Walker/Krekel) Brumm in New London, Iowa. The message is "Berlin, Germany, October 16, 1965; Dear Bill and Leota, Every day I try to write a few cards. Just seems as if I can't get them all out. We have had real nice, sunny, but cool weather. Today it is raining but supposed to clear off. Sammie and Jerry are going to the football. We are going to the British PX.

"We went to East Berlin Thursday on a bus tour, glad to get back. Had to take the pictures out of the bus wndow. We only stopped once at the Russian Memorial where all the wheels are buried. Be seeing you, as ever, Sammie and Betty"

    General Newsprint Marion News
A short report that the families of Samuel Clinton Walker and William David Walker were attending a family reunion in Ottumwa, Iowa; Also that Jerry Dean Walker was leaving town to attend Southern Methodist University.

The reunion in Ottumwa, Iowa, puzzled me until I spoke to Marge Kimble regarding it. She replied that there were frequent reunions held in Ottumwa because the extended families of the Frizzells (mostly around Osceola and Woodbine, Iowa) and of Sam and Reil Walker (around Morning Sun and Wapello, Iowa) determined it was about a half-way point between the two regions of Iowa, saving traveling time that would be required if they were held in either of the actual locations. She also reckons that this reunion in 1955 was likely about the last one the two sets of family held in Ottumwa.

I imagine a number of photographs of family reunions that are posted here probably were taken in Ottumwa. (At least one living or private individual is linked to this item - Details withheld.)

  • Notes  Marriage Fact:
    • According to family genealogist Marjorie Kimble, for a time in the 1930s it was the "in" thing for sortheast Iowa people to do to go to Monmouth, Illinois, to get married. Sam and Betty Walker did this. Later people went to Kahoka, Missouri (Bill and Margaret Walker, for example). Still later couples went to Nashua, where "The Little Brown Church in the Vale" was located. Why these places were arbitrarily popular and chosen is unknown.

Present were the Vincent Hatt family and Elizabeth Hatt of Marion, the Richard A. Hatt family of Jackson, Michigan, the Jack Hatt family of Cedar Rapids and Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Cooper and Denise Hatt of Burlington.

    Residence:
    • Probably around 1963 or 1964, Sam and Betty moved onto an acreage which was nearly "in the country," although I believe it was in the city limits of an ever expanding Cedar Rapids. They had a black Shetland pony named Midnight when they lived at this location.
