The Family of Jacob Nelson Moyers in About 1884
The Family of Jacob Nelson Moyers in About 1884
Not long after the birth of their second daughter, Caroline "Maude" Moyers, seen on Jacob Nelson Moyers' lap, the family posed for this portrait. The older sister was Alpha Victoria "Fay" Moyers, and the mother was Kathryn Ann "Bappy" (Stanley) Moyers. This photograph was likely taken in Des Moines County, Iowa. Maude was born in January 1884.

Jacob and Kathryn may have been courting and not yet married when this photograph was taken. He appears a bit younger than in a family group photo from 1884, so possibly this was in 1880 or 1881 (they were married September 2, 1881).

Sisters Caroline "Maude" (left) and Alpha Victoria "Fay" Moyers (right) look almost like twins in this photograph taken of them in about 1887.

This photograph is of the children of Jacob Nelson Moyers and Kathryn Ann "Bappy" Stanley. Son Stanley was born in October 1886, so this photograph was very likely taken in 1888, at which time the family was probably living in Des Moines County, Iowa.
Samuel Nelson 'Sam' and Lucinda Hopkins 'Lucy' (Deen) Moyers 50th Wedding Anniversary (1 of 2)
Samuel Nelson "Sam" and Lucinda Hopkins "Lucy" (Deen) Moyers 50th Wedding Anniversary (1 of 2)
This photograph was taken at the 50th wedding anniversary of Sam and Lucy Moyers, probably in August 1896 as their wedding was August 8, 1846. About 1/3 of the family posed in this picture can be identified, and likely the other 2/3 are those whom we'd love to know who they were.

Those who have been identified in this photograph are: Nora Olive (Larkin) Cunningham, Wiley E. Cunningham, Samuel Wilbur Larkin, Adolphus "Lee" Larkin, Abigail "Blanche" (Larkin) Marshall, Ira David Marshall, Oliver Spencer Marshall, Daisy Esther Marshall (baby), Rebecca Ellen (Pence) Moyers, George Washington Earl Moyers, Pearl Alfred "P. A." Moyers, Hattie Mae "Harriett" (Moyers) Walker, Elsie Ella Walker, Jacob Nelson Moyers, Kathryn Ann "Bappy" (Stanley) Moyers, Lillian Bell Moyers (later Giertz), Samuel Nelson Moyers, and Lucinda Hopkins (Deen) Moyers.

The woman to Sam and Lucy's left was identified as Cody (with a question mark), as a person who stood up with them at their wedding.

Two children in the front row I had identified as probably being Stanley Wilbur Moyers and Halleck Roy "Hal" Moyers (later "Moyer"). The boy I guess to be Hal particularly resembles a later photo of him as an adult.

Although a later photo of Cora Ellen (Moyers) Hamilton exists, I cannot see anyone who seems exactly to fit or match with her photograph twenty years later.

Some of the older people in this may be Sam's brothers. His brother Jacob Josiah Moyers was living in Chicago, and was married to a woman named Martha (who may or may not have still been alive in 1896. She was dead by 1900). Benjamin Franklin Moyers was married to the former Barbara Deam, also a former Des Moines County, resident, and they lived in Missouri.

Elizabeth Ann (Kurtz) Moyers was divorced from Sam's brother, George Washington Moyers, but she and some of her children and families lived nearby in Louisa County, Iowa. If they were on good enough terms with her ex husband's family, they may be in this photograph. Also, I am not sure if Sam's brother George Moyers was still living or not, so he is another possibility. The Rexroats of McDonough County, Illinois, were also nephews and nieces, and not living too distant. Even the Lakin family, many of whom were still in Carrollton, Illinois, and vicinity, though Sam's sister Eliza had been dead over 30 years, may have travelled to Iowa for this celebration.

This photograph was provided courtesy of Larry Leon Dowell, Sam and Lucy's third great grandson. The identification was done by a relative of his, except for Hattie Mae and Elsie Walker, and Pearl Alfred Moyers.
    Moyers and Stanley Kids
    Moyers and Stanley Kids
Steven Robert Piper, who kindly provided this photograph, labelled it as "Moyers and Stanley kids." I believe it is a safe bet that Stanley Wilbur Moyers is the boy in the front, but none of the four girls really look like other pictures of his sisters, Alpha Victoria "Fay" Moyers or Caroline "Maude" Moyers. All four do, at least to my eye, appear to resemble individuals in another photograph that is available of "Moyers and Stanley Women."

Steven Robert Piper kindly provided this photograph. There are two Moyers women in it, sisters Caroline "Maude" Moyers and Alpha Victoria "Fay" (Moyers) Cox. The other four are presumably cousins, nieces of their mother, Kathryn Ann "Bappy" (Stanley) Moyers. Maude is in the center, back row, and Fay is in the center front of the photograph. Their maternal aunts and uncle, some of whom are apparently the parents of the other four women, were Mary J. Stanley, Martha E. Stanley, Charles B. Stanley, and Emma C. (Stanley) Barrowman.

Maude Moyers is on the left of this photo, her sister Fay Cox is standing, and their friend, probably cousin, Myrna, is on the right.

Stanley Moyers and His Father, Jacob Moyers
Jacob Nelson Moyers lived to the age of 99 in 1951. Stanley Wilbur Moyers, his son, was born in 1886 and died in 1964. This photograph was likely taken while Jacob was in his 80s, though it could have been later. As a guess, I'm going to say it was about 1940. They were both living in Wyoming at the time.

Stanley Moyers was in the service during World War I when he wrote his father, Jacob Nelson Moyers, regarding the situation in New Jersey. Jacob was living in Spokane, Washington, at the time (at 8118 Ivory Street).
