The 50th Wedding Anniversary Photograph of Pearl Alfred "P. A." and Jessie Mae (Swan) Moyers
Pearl and Jessie Moyers, married March 1, 1898, at Jessie's home in Wapello, Iowa, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1948. This photograph provided by Joy Conwell was dated to that year by the newspaper article published announcing their anniversary, which ported the same photo with the article.

Four Generations and Three Families: Moyers, Harrison, Lavalleur
There are four generations represented in this photograph from 1947. Standing in the back is Charles Leaford "Lee" Lavalleur, in front of him is his wife, Wanda Lea (Harrison) Lavalleur, holding their baby daughter, Deborah. To the left of the Lavalleurs are Wanda's parents, Frances Willard (Moyers) Harrison and (in back of her) Earl Joseph Harrison Sr. The couple on the right are Pearl Alfred "P. A." Moyers and his wife, Jessie Mae (Swan) Moyers, the parents of Frances, the grandparents of Wanda, and the great grandparents of Deborah.

  • Notes  Iowa Marriage Records:
    • Moyers, Pearl Alfred; Spouse: Swan, Jessie M.; Marriage Date: 1 March 1898; County: Louisa; State: Iowa

    Alt. Marriage:
    • (According to the obituary of Pearl Moyers, Jessie and Pearl Moyers were married March 1878. This is impossible as he would have been 3 and Jessie was not yet born!)
    • (According to A History of Des Moines County, Iowa, and Its People, March 6, 1898, was Pearl Moyers and Jessie Swan's wedding date.)

    Research:
    • For a time after the birth of daughter Frances, the Moyers family lived in Robstown, Texas. A card, undated, from Iva Marie Dotson was sent to Frances there. As Pearl was listed in City Directories up until 1909 and in the 1910 federal census in Yellow Spring Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, it probably was soon after 1910. By 1915 he and Jessie were living in Wapello Township, Louisa County, Iowa.

    Residence:
    • (Per genealogist, Joy Conwell, according to a personal card in her possession.)
    • (Per Pearl Moyer's obituary, he and Jessie settled in Morning Sun in 1926, so apparently that was after the month of March when they were listed in George Moyers's obituary as living in Wapello.)

    Newspaper Article:
    • There was (sic) exciting times at the Earl Moyers farm south of Newport recently when a bull attacked a team of horses. One horse was so badly gored that it had to be shot. Its mate was also severely injured. The bull had been locked up in the barn while P. A. Moyers, father of Earl, and Lloyd Patterson, the hired man were using the team in some work in the barn lot. The bull broke out of the barn and attacked the team, but did not attempt to molest the men.

    Anniversary Announcement:
    • MARRIED 50 YEARS -- Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Moyers, Morning Sun, rounded out 50 years of married life March 1. Due to illness in the family, no special celebration was planned. Pearl Moyers and Jessie Swan were married in Wapello in 1898 by Reverend T. S. Poole. They have 3 children, Earl Moyers and Mrs. Earl Harrison of Burlington, and Mrs. Jack Pilling of Mediapolis. There are 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
    • SCHWENGEL WRITES TO MOYERS

Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Moyers, who celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on March 1, received the following letter from Congressman Fred Schwengel:

March 9, 1957, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Moyers Morning Sun, Iowa

      Hello Mr. and Mrs. Moyers:

Thought you might like to have an extra copy of the enclosed clipping announcing your 59th wedding anniversary.

To have had the opportunity to live and serve so long together is in itself an indication of fine citizenship. The rich blessings that have been yours and those of your friends and neighbors for more than one-fourth the history of this great and beloved country, are a part of the heritage all of us enjoy.

May we join your family and friends in extending heartiest "congratulations" on this significant occasion, and may the spirit that reigns over us all continue to bless you with health and happiness for many years to come.

      Sincerely yours, Fred Schwengel
