    Family Card Games
Having grown up in surrounded by members of my mother's family, I should probably have become a card shark when I grew up, but I didn't. Card games were endemic to any family get together. They were more important than television, and probably a better way to actually interact with other real, living persons. This game, probably from about 1970 or perhaps a little later, was likely "101." Most of the games we played didn't involve any betting or money, but in the 1960s 101 appeared in the family repertoire. Usually it involved dimes and quarters, so no fortunes exchanged hands, but the coins on the table seem indicative of that particular game. Regardless, at this table this particular night were Vera Marie "Jakie" (Walker) Virden on the left with her back to the photographer, then George Percy Walker, her father, Helen Marie (Collingwood) Umphrey, Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker, a slight bit of an unknown person, and the back of John W. "J. W." Virden's head (the husband of Vera).
