Doris Idella and Wilda Maxine Walker were the daughters of Thomas Clifford "Cliff" and Wilda "Marguerite" Walker. Mazie Ella and Vera Marie Walker were daughters of George Percy Walker and Verona Violet Dotson. Shirley Lea and Beverly Jean Broeker were the daughters of Ruth Rebecca Walker and Wallace Ernest "Wally" Broeker.
A Walker Family Reunion in About 1946
A Walker Family Reunion in About 1946
Based upon the ages of those who are children in this photograph, it was likely taken in about 1946. Several family members helped in its identification (I am a bit unsure about several of them). This photograph was provided courtesy of Carol Ann Kelley. Several persons could not be identified positively due to their placement or the overall quality of the photograph, and one child does not seem to fit at this date with family members, but generally it is correct.

Those who were at this reunion were: Gerald Wayne Kimble, Jennie "Reil" (Hannah) Walker, Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker, Leonard "Max" Dotson, Elaine Ida (Brown) Dotson, Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson, (Probably) Paul Eugene "Paulie" Umphrey Jr., Paul Eugene "Tubby" Umphrey Jr., Lois Ann (Thibodeau) Umphrey, Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, Wilda Maxine (Walker) Thomas, Wilda "Marguerite" (Wyerman) Walker, Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, William David "Bill" Walker, Doris Idella Walker, Thomas Clifford "Cliff" Walker, Mazie Ella Walker-Belles, Unknown (Possibly Vera Marie "Jakie" Walker), David Floyd "Dave" Howey, Margretta Mae (Umphrey) Howey, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell, Ted L. Belles, Jerry Dean Walker, Gary Lynn Walker, George Percy Walker, Robert Charles "Bob" Walker, John Franklin Russell, (probably) Jean Louise Walker, Carol Sue Belles, and Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker.

This photograph was taken in the mountains of Colorado in summer 1969. My father and I travelled west and stopped to visit the Walker relatives in Colorado Springs and we went to the cabin owned by Doris and Marian for one day/evening.

Residences of Maternal Family Members in New London, Iowa During the 20th Century
Residences of Maternal Family Members in New London, Iowa During the 20th Century
I constructed this map of my home town of New London, Iowa, and noted the residences where various family members connected to the maternal Walker family lived during my lifetime in the town. I since have determined the location of another family earlier on, Geoffrey Paul and Maude Mae (Walker) Umphrey, who were living in New London for a few years before Geoffrey's death in 1931. Using census data from the 1930 federal census, I believe it was six houses directly north of our family's home on South Pine Street (also on South Pine).

There were other family members, more distantly connected, living in town during the years I was there, but I was not completely aware of these connections at the time I undertook this exercise.

  • Notes  Personal Recollection:
    • (Personal recollections of genealogist, Dennis Brumm:)

The last time I saw Cliff and Marguerite Walker was in 1976, over a four day Thanksgiving holiday weekend. A friend and I had traveled from Ames to Boulder, Colorado, to visit some mutual friends, and he and I took a day trip down to Colorado Springs and ate lunch at the Walker's house. Cliff had made some roast beef, which he'd cooked till it fell apart ("I like it this way," he said, and Marguerite said something about their cooking which I cannot remember). We sat and talked for probably three hours, having a real good time. They confessed they'd decided to have their remains cremated when they died, and Marguerite said she didn't want a funeral, especially after seeing what all had happened at my mom's, and how hard it was on so many people, including me.
