  • Notes  Biography:
    • WALTER AND MARIA VANCE BISHOP

Walter Bishop and his - wife, Maria Vance Bishop (1850-1937 [sic: 1927?]), lived south of Danville, where two of their children were born - Louis E. Bishop (1877-1954) and Fannie E. (Mrs. Adolph) Totemeier (1883-1972).

Louis Bishop was a partner in Hanks and Bishop, breeders of champion Duroc Jersey hogs, an enterprise that reached its peak during and after World War I. The New London Journal commented (February 18, 1954) that Perry Hanks was the salesman and Louis Bishop the breeder and technician: Their auction sales brought buyers from all over the United States, and they owned "Royal Pathfinder," the world champion Duroc boar.

We are told that some boys rode Pathfinder on a hot afternoon until the boar became overheated and died. His untimely death ended the supply of champion hogs.

The partnership dissolved in the deflation of 1920-1921, but in October 1925, the Journal reported L. E. and E. W. Bishop held an auction of Duroc hogs three and a half miles east of New London, with Nelson Kraschel (later Iowa governor) as auctioneer. The Journal reported (October 7, 1926) that Bishop and Bishop's Duroc Jersey hogs won prizes at the Winfield Fair, the Burlington Fair, Iowa State Fair, the National Swine Show at Peoria, and the Inter-State Fair at Sioux City.

Louis Bishop married Etta Wright, and their children were Everett, Ruth Blakely, Faith Super, Nellie Thomas and Ruby DeSpain. Perry Hanks' wife, Theresa Wright, was a sister of Etta Wright Bishop, and they were daughters of Dunham and Melissa Raines Wright.
