In 1878 Charles Brumm's son, Philip Brumm, who was born in July 1845 of and was the second oldest son in Charles and Julianna's family, married Sophia (also spelled "Sophya") Meyers. She was born September 1, 1855, in Burlington and died May 15, 1920. Her parents, John (born circa 1834) and Dorothea (Staler) Meyers (born circa 1833), were natives of Germany. Sophia had at least one older sister, Mary, who was born in about 1850.
In the 1880 census, the homes of William Brumm, Philip Brumm, and their mother, Julianna Brumm, living with her younger children, were listed as three consecutive dwellings in the census enumeration of Benton Township that was taken on the 14th and 15th of June, 1880 by Thomas S. Poo. Apparently there were three houses on the farm.
Mother Julianna is listed as "Julia" on this census (indicating some further Americanization of her name). She was living in dwelling 103 and as family number 103 in Benton Township. Julia was 57 years old, which, if correct, would make her birthday in 1822/23 according to this census. Her children who were still at home were John, age 25, a farmer, born in Iowa; Charles, age 20, also a farmer, born in Iowa; Julia, 18 years old, "without occupation," born in Iowa; and Lewis (spelled "Louis" in 1860), aged 14, at school, born in Iowa.
Julianna Oswalt (or Osswald) Brumm, the matriarch of the Carl Brumm family who immigrated to the United States and Iowa as a young woman, died March 6, 1902; at that time she was living with the family of her son, John, and his wife, Mary. Julianna is buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Des Moines County, Iowa.
In 1880, Philip and his wife, Sophia (Sophya) Brumm, were living in dwelling 105, were family number 105. They did not yet have any children in June of 1880.
William and Helena Brumm, who lived in dwelling 104 and were family number 104 in the 1880 census of Benton Township, had three children and additionally Helena's mother, Mary, living with them. All the children were listed as born in Iowa; in this census, William Brumm was listed as born in Louisiana rather than Württemberg, which was incorrect.
In 1880, William and Helena's oldest son, Charles H. Brumm, was listed as six years old; Leslie Thomas Brumm (male) was 4, and Boyd Brumm was 2. Mary Thomas, William's mother-in-law, was listed as "without occupation" and 61 years old (making her birthday about 1819; it is much more likely she was closer to 70 years old and born closer to 1810). Mary probably continued to live with her daughter and son-in-law for another nine years until she died in 1889; in 1885 at the time of the Iowa census, she was still in their household, as stated earlier in the discussion about her.
Carl and Julianna Brumm's son, Philip Brumm (sometimes spelled "Phillip"), and his wife, Sophia A. (Meyers) Brumm, had five children. These were:
