Julianna [Oswalt] Brumm - Synopsis

Julianna Oswalt (referred to as Julianna, Juliana, Anna, and even once as Julia, the name of one of her daughters) was a native to Sternenfels, Oberamt Maulbronn, Württemburg, Germany, where she was married to Carl Brumm, most likely in about 1843. Julianna was born May, 1823 and died March 6, 1902 in Des Moines County, Iowa. Julianna and Carl emigrated to the United States in November/December, 1853 via the ship Heidelberg which departed from the shores of Normandy (Le Havre) and arrived in New Orleans on December 18, 1853. By 1854/55 the family had made their way to Burlington, Iowa. After their arrival in America, husband Carl chose to use the name Charles in this New World.

Julianna and Charles had ten children, although the U. S. census of 1900 stated there were nine. Five of the children were alive in 1900 as well as in 1905 when a biography was written centering on her son, William (Wilhelm), in A Biographical Review of Des Moines County, Iowa. Three of those five would have been William, John, and Philip, but the other two are not determined (a likely candidate is Margaret, who probably married a man named William Burgus and continued to live in Des Moines County). A full listing of known children is covered under the link for Charles (Carl) above.

Julianna is buried in the Methodist Cemetery, Des Moines County, Iowa.
