William Brumm - Synopsis

William (Wilhelm) Brumm was born February 12, 1850 in Carlsbad, Württemberg, and emigrated in November/December of 1853 with his parents, Carl (who used the name Charles in America) and Julianna [Oswalt] Brumm to the United States. The family arrived at New Orleans December 18, 1853 on the ship Heidelberg from Le Havre (Normandy), France, and remained there until about 1854; they then moved to Burlington in Des Moines County, Iowa, where they lived until 1867. William received his schooling in the public schools of Burlington, and worked for a time as a grocery store clerk for several years after finishing school. His father, Charles, died in 1870, and William, along with other brothers, continued to farm the family acreage.

In 1871 William married Helena Vandalia Thomas, a native of Benton Township, the daughter of Mary Flesher/Walker Thomas and Isham N.(?) Thomas. William and Helena had seven children:

  • Charles H. Brumm, who was born January 18, 1874, and died November 7, 1894. Charles is buried in the North Walker Cemetery, Irish Ridge Road, Des Moines County, Iowa.
  • Leslie Thomas Brumm, (m) who was born November, 1875 and died in 1941. Leslie was married to Mary Katherine Jacoby, whose first marriage to a man named Dawson had given her a son, Ralph. (Ralph later adopted the Brumm surname). Leslie and Mary Brumm's children were: William Glen Brumm, (born May 22, 1911 and died November 1985 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon); Ruth J. Brumm; Frances Vandalia [Brumm] Panther; and Odetta Nevada [Brumm] Harris.
  • Boyd William Brumm, who was born May 14, 1878, and died June 27, 1921. Boyd is buried in Kossuth Cemetery, Kossuth, Des Moines County, Iowa. Boyd married Elnora Schuler and they farmed in Benton Township.
  • Ruth Ellen Brumm, who was born July 19, 1889, and died April 9, 1958. Between 1915 and 1920 Ruth married Charles R. Friedemann, who was born circa 1887 and died circa 1958. They lived in Alexis, Illinois.
  • (Oliver) Clayton Brumm, who was born February 7, 1892 in Des Moines County, Iowa, and died April 3, 1965 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. Clayton is buried in the Kossuth Cemetery near Mediapolis, Iowa. On February 4, 1915, in Mediapolis, Clayton married Bertha Leota Lett, who was born in Iowa June 21, 1893, and died August 3, 1953. Bertha was the daughter of Ella Matilda [Johnson] and Walter Theodore Lett (both were of Swedish heritage). Bertha is also buried at Kossuth Cemetery next to Clayton. Bertha and Clayton Brumm's children are listed via their direct alpha index pages. They include:
    • Helen Laverne Brumm, November 5, 1915 in Iowa and died January 15, 1975 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Helen first married Ruben Wuellner, born December 1, 1902 in Illinois, and died August 1970. Helen and Ruben were divorced and she later married Edward Dressler, born September 17, 1904 in Illinois, and died September 1973 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They were married between 1967 and 1969 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
    • Dorothy Virginia Brumm, born March 23, 1917 in Erie, Whiteside County, Illinois, and died May 28, 1998 in Saint Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. Dorothy was buried June 1, 1998 in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. Her first husband, whom she married about 1941, was Carl Harold (who used his middle name) Herman, who was born August 1917, and died October 1947 in Burlington; Harold is buried at Aspen Grove Cemetery. After Harold's death in a firefighting accident, Dorothy, on April 14, 1950, Dorothy married Paul H. Stodt, born between 1916/17, and died January 8, 1987 in Burlington, Iowa. Paul is also buried in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
    • William Lett Brumm, born March 5, 1921 in (rural) Mediapolis, Des Moines County, Iowa, and died May 12, 1986 in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. Bill was buried May 15, 1986 in Kossuth Cemetery, Kossuth, Des Moines County, Iowa. On January 18, 1952 in Burlington, Bill married Hattie Leota [Walker] Krekel, who was born March 16, 1912 in Louisa County, Iowa, and died November 21, 1967 in Burlington. Her first husband, Kenneth Krekel, had died of leukemia. Leota Brumm was buried November 24, 1967 in Elmwood Cemetery, Morning Sun, Louisa County. Bill Brumm later married Pauline Swanson of Illinois. She lives in West Burlington, Iowa.
    • Boyd Wendall Brumm, born December 6, 1922, and died August 9, 1944 in the English Channel during World War II while serving on PT boat 503.
    • Lorma Leota [Brumm] Allen, who lives in Davenport, Iowa.
    • Dale Hubert Brumm, who is married to Norma Ruth Byers. They live in Sioux City, Iowa.
    • Kathleen Lucille Brumm, born April 13, 1930 in Iowa, and died February 1978 in Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana. Kathleen married Alfred Clayton Erickson ("Al"), born May 28, 1929 in Puritan (?), Michigan, and died November 18, 2000 in Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa.
    Clayton Brumm also married Margaret "Pearl" [Burgus] Bailey, who was born May 2, 1893, and died in July 1983. Pearl is buried at Kossuth Cemetery.
  • Burton Isham Brumm, who was born March 12, 1899, and died April 2, 1952. Burt was married to Garnet, who was born June 26, 1895, and died May 19, 1994 in Moravia, Appanoose County, Iowa.
  • Byron Isaac Brumm, who was born March 12, 1899, and died January 8, 1951. Byron married a woman named Mable, who was born October 24, 1903, and died March 31, 1989 in Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa.
