"Buddy" Walker
This young boy was identified as "Buddy" Walker, and is with his parents, Charles "Cecil" and Rosa Ellen (Locke) Walker in a family photograph provided by Marge Kimble. It was dated 1946. He is evidently Charles Walker, their son. If so, as of 1991, he was a resident of Denver, Colorado.

"Pontoons"? (Dennis William Brumm)
Someone once said my feet were shaped like pontoons. They were, and are, awfully large, but as I age and watch lots of young people grow taller and larger than I, at least here in California, I feel a little more like I'm part of the mainstream nowadays. This photograph seems to have been taken about in 8th grade, especially judging from the school photograph of that year. Possibly it was for 8th grade graduation, as I can't remember many reasons I had to dress up at all in that time period, though another possibility may have been a piano recital. My feet grew to size 13 AAA's by 7th grade, but then stopped, thankfully. My height kept going. I think I was 5'10" or so in 8th grade, I sort of grew tall even as a kid, not having the spurt lots of boys do in high school. Today I have shrunk from my 6'4" size I reached as a kid to about 6'3", but according to Chinese shoemakers, my feet grew to size 14. I don't think they're longer, but they aren't AAA width anymore. The Clorox bottle pig sitting on the floor of this picture was a creation of my mom's. I think the fad ran through a lot of the family about this time. I thought they were weird.

'Reese Villa,' The Laura Reese Residence
"Reese Villa," The Laura Reese Residence
This was a photograph of the house I grew up in, taken in about 1907 and published in a book about New London, Iowa. My father, William Lett "Bill" Brumm, purchased the house from Anna L. and John Gordon Reese in 1952. The photograph is from a photocopy provided by my cousin, Doris Idella Walker.

1912 Walker Family Photos: Charles Pearsey Walker's Second Home Near Newport
1912 Walker Family Photos: Charles Pearsey Walker's Second Home Near Newport
When Sam Walker moved into his father's farm home, Charles P. Walker moved to a second house that was on the property. He lived there with his second wife, Sarah Ann "Sally" (Houseman/Edgar) Walker. In this photograph Sam, his wife and three children are visiting Charles and Sally. It was probably taken the same day as the photograph of the Moyers and Walkers who were in a canoe on a pond at the farm.

Left to right: Hattie Mae (Moyers) Walker, holding Hattie "Leota" Walker, Zella "Myrtle" Walker, Charles Pearsey Walker (standing, porting a beard which is seen in other photographs of this time), Sarah, known as "Aunt Sallie" Walker, sitting in her chair, and father Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker holding the hands of his two youngest sons at the time, Paul Moyers Walker, and Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker (it is unclear which might be which). Marge Kimble kindly provided this photograph.

1912 Walker Family Photos: In the Back Yard of Charles Pearsey Walker's Home Near Newport
1912 Walker Family Photos: In the Back Yard of Charles Pearsey Walker's Home Near Newport
One of a series of photographs apparently all taken the same summer day in 1912, this includes several family members who can be almost certainly identified and children who can be surmised. This photograph is from the back yard of the home where Charles Pearsey Walker and wife Sarah lived.

Standing, left to right in this photograph are: John Franklin Russell, Elsie Ella Walker, Maude Mae Walker, Hattie Mae "Harriett" Walker holding Hattie "Leota," and Flossie Zella Russell. Kneeling on the ground is Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker, holding a son who is probably Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker (age two at the time, and known as "Sammie" when he was young).

1912 Walker Family Photos: Sammie, Myrtle, and Leota Walker
1912 Walker Family Photos: Sammie, Myrtle, and Leota Walker
This photograph from late spring or early summer 1912 is of three Walker children. Sammie (Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker) is the little boy on the left. Myrtle (Zella "Myrtle" Walker) is seated on the chair, barefoot, so it must not have been too chilly of a day. The baby is my mother, Leota Walker (Hattie "Leota"). She had been born in March.

I have a feeling the series of summer 1912 photographs that have surfaced may have been taken on the occasion of Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker's 43rd birthday celebration in July.

1912 Walker Family Photos: The Summer Canoe on the Pond
1912 Walker Family Photos: The Summer Canoe on the Pond
This is a photograph (photo postcard style) I have inherited. My cousin, Virginia Golliher, has the same image and the people in the canoe are identified on hers. Her mother, Myrtle, and my mother, Leota, were both in the picture.

The older woman on the left is Rebecca Ellen (Pence) Moyers. The girl in front of her is Zella "Myrtle" Walker. George Washington Earl Moyers is rowing the canoe. On the right are Hattie Mae "Harriett" (Moyers) Walker, and she is holding the baby (my mother), Hattie "Leota" Walker. My mother was born in March 1912, so this photograph was taken in that summer. Myrtle was 7 or else 8, depending upon the date of the picture.

Seen at Christmas, this view of Burlington, Iowa, is in the old central business district. For years the area was declining due to mall fever, but recently, I am told, it is making something of a comeback.

A Crocheted Doily Made by Hattie "Leota" (Walker/Krekel) Brumm
My mother, Leota Brumm, was always game for crafts. She didn't learn to knit until the early 1960s, but did know how to crochet and made a lot of doilies when I was a kid, including this golden one.

A Family Reunion in 1988 at the Home of Shirley and Larry Smith (1 of 2)
This is one of two group photographs that exist which are provided courtesy of Marge Kimble of family members who attended a reunion in 1988 at the home of Shirley Lea (Broeker) and Norton Lawrence "Larry" Smith in Wapello, Iowa.

These people were: standing, left to right: Samuel Clinton "Sam" Walker, Wallace Ernest "Wally" Broeker, Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker, Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker, and Marjorie Naomi "Marge" (Walker) Kimble

Sitting, left to right: Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson, Doris Daisy (Frizzell) Cartwright, and Theodore Roosevelt "Ted" Dotson. It looks a bit as though someone may have been obscured behind Sam Walker, next to Wally Broeker.

A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (1 of 3)
This reunion was evidently in the autumn or spring, as evidenced by the coats everyone is wearing. Many of the unknown people in this photograph are probably from the Frizzell family. If so, this reunion was one that was periodically held in Ottumwa, Iowa, considered halfway between the Osceola area where they lived and the Morning Sun area where many of the Walker family lived. If before 1951, the woman between Flossie Russell and Sam Walker was probably their sister, Everna Frizzell (the #9 person). Other photographs of her wearing a similar hat (that obscures her face, unfortunately) do exist.

A second photograph, nearly identical to this one, exists as well and is posted on this site. Additionally a third photograph, side view, of women at the reunion, exists and is posted.

Known family members included in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), George Percy Walker (1896-1985), William David "Bill" Walker (1918-1977), Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957), Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner (1897-1970), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker (1894-1976), Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958), and Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson (1903-1990).

A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (2 of 3)
A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (2 of 3)
This photograph is nearly identical to another photograph from this reunion, probably it was taken only moments after or before the first one that has been up online for a number of years. Known people are identified on it, please check it for who is who. Many people at this reunion are presently not identified. Lots of them are probably Frizzell family members.

People who are presently known to be in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), George Percy Walker (1896-1985), William David "Bill" Walker (1918-1977), Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker (1869-1957), Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner (1897-1970), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker (1894-1976), Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958), and Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson (1903-1990).

A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (3 of 3)
A Family Reunion, Probably Between 1950/53 (3 of 3)
This photograph of a reunion that occurred sometime between 1950/53 was taken from a side angle as a group of women at the reunion were posing for another photographer, apparently.

The women who are presently known to be in this photograph include: Hazel Ann (Miller) Walker (1896-1975), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), Margaret Leora (Lesher) Walker (1918-2004), Elizabeth Etta "Betty" (Hatt) Walker (1914-1997), and Jennie "Reil" (Hannah Walker) (1892-1958),

The older woman wearing the hat is probably Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell (who died April 27, 1951). Many of the other family members are likely her descendants, as I believe this was at an annual or periodic Frizzell/Walker reunion, likely in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Zella "Myrtle" (Walker) Dotson and Maude Mae (Walker/Umphrey) Fortner were in the other two photographs from this reunion, but are not visible in this one.

Back row, left to right, Thomas Samuel "Tom" Umphrey, the only photograph of him with facial hair I have seen, his wife, Helen Marie (Collingwood) Umphrey, Lisa Marie and Kaye Lynn Pillsbury, the Umphreys' granddaughters. In the front row, left to right, are Sandy Pillsbury, her husband, Daniel Lee "Dan" Pillsbury, Dan's son, Leslie R. "Les" Pillsbury, behind him, kneeling, Christopher James Wright, the son of Sandy's sister, Carol Kelley, and on the far right is David Otis Pillsbury, the son of Sandy and Dan Pillsbury.

A Family Reunion: Probably Between 1940-1945
A Family Reunion: Probably Between 1940-1945
The people who can be identified in this photograph the children of Charles Pearsey Walker - Everna Frizzell, Sam, Tom, and Jim Walker, and Flossie Russell. The three unknown men in positions 2, 8, and 11 appear almost to be brothers; they seem to have a strong family resemblance. Judging from their ages relative to the Walkers (almost contemporary it would appear), they seem unlikely to be the spouses and/or children of Everna and Eli Frizzell. It is possible some of the older unknown people might be Edgars. There are no Frizzells who fit the bill (see the one possible exception below).

Left to right: unknown child, unknown man, Samuel Nathaniel "Sam" Walker, Thomas "Tom" Walker, Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell, Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell, unknown woman with sunglasses, unknown man, unknown woman in front, Mildred Jane "Millie" (Beauchamp/Feldman) Walker*, unknown man, James G. "Jim" Walker.

*The woman identified as Millie Walker also bears a resemblance to Talma (Frizzell) Lyon, the daughter of Vernie Frizzill.

A Group of Extended Walker Families
This photograph, as another on this site, was taken in the summer of 1961. Although I am in it, I do not know where the photograph was taken. The two children in the front are Shawn Kyle and Kathleen Deanne "Kathy" Brunk. Standing, back row, left to right, are George Percy Walker, Dennis William Brumm, Vera Marie "Jakie" Virden, Jean Louise Brunk, Arnold Deaneen "Arnie" Brunk, Verona Violet (Dotson) Walker, Jeffrey Arnold "Jeff" Brunk, and Connie Jean Brunk. A Group of Men at Frank Walker's Farm
A Group of Men at Frank Walker's Farm
The farm of Francis Isaac "Frank" Walker was on the Iowa River. This photograph has been identified as having been taken at his farm. Frank was the son of Charles Francis Walker and Jessie Deborah Vaughn. Marvin Walker, Frank's son, has helped identify some of the people in the photo. Some were also identified by Marge (Walker) Kimble. The photograph is estimated to have been taken between 1938/43.

The two children in the back are unidentified. Otherwise, in the back row, left to right: Dale H. Walker, Unknown (possibly Carl Vaughn Walker or Byron Ernst), Earl Leander Walker, Unknown. Front row left to right: Charles Leander "Lee" Walker, Frank Walker, Charles "Cecil" Walker, John Franklin Russell. On the far right sitting on the grass is Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell

It seems likely the man second from the left in the back row would be Carl Vaughn Walker (Frank and Earl's brother) or Byron Ernst (John and Flossie's foster child and the husband of Clara Walker Ernst who was Frank and Earl Walker's sister); he also somewhat resembles George Percy Walker. The children playing in the background shadows could be Frank's two younger sons, Marvin and Dean Walker, but it is just too dark to tell whether or not that is the case. This photo was most likely taken after the start of World War II, although it is possible Cecil was in the service before the outbreak of that conflict and I based the earlier 1938 date upon how old Dale Walker seems to me.

A Group of Young Men, All Unknown (Maternal Families)
A Group of Young Men, All Unknown (Maternal Families)
There were several photographs of unknown young men in a photograph album owned by my mother, Hattie "Leota" Walker. Two of these were taken at the same time, one a group of seven or so with the youngest about 12 or 13, and most of the men looking to be graduates, probably high school, so ages 17-19. One of the older guys appears to be wearing a school letter sweater with the letter "N" on it (New London?).

Two of these guys were in a second photograph taken at the same time.

My mother graduated from Wapello High School in the class of 1930. This may have been from that year's graduation, though without positive identification of any of the young men in the photograph, I don't really know.

A Map of the Area With the 'Walker Homestead' in Louisa County, Iowa
A Map of the Area With the "Walker Homestead" in Louisa County, Iowa
The "Walker Homestead" refers to the home built by Samuel Dotson (1858-1931) for Charles Pearsey Walker and his second wife, Sarah Ann (Houseman/Edgar) Walker, finished in 1903. The small village of Newport is a few miles southeast of where the home was. Samuel Nathaniel Walker and his families lived there as well until the 1930s. The house was torn down, probably in the 1960s or at the latest in the 1970s.
