
Originally conceived as a bit of a joke to make the local state Republican leaders wriggle a bit, they called our bluff and came to Frisbie House to speak with us and presented themselves with dignity. They didn't seem like the evil Nixon at all.
Of course we were in a University town and these were the days of moderates in the Republican Party. The state's governor Ray was in this number. There was no religious right yet, although around this time Phyllis Schlafly had begun her conservative tirade against the Equal Rights Amendment which led to the National Embarrassment that is today's Republican Party.
Don't take this wrong. I don't care much for Democrats, either.
