It was a busy day in heaven when god needed to talk to Lot, so god didn't bother to speak to Lot directly about the fact he was going to destroy his home town (perhaps god was embarrassed about making so many errors in judgment regarding Sodom and having to do this at all maybe left him with a bad taste in his mouth...). Still, talking directly, out in the open, without shame would have seemed the most expeditious manner for god to deliver his message. But he had this image of being mysterious to live up to too. So instead, god sent two angels dressed up like men, who, when they got to Sodom, wanted to go out on the town; they so rarely got to hang around in Asia Major those days. Lot felt they'd have a better time over at his place.
