She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; and a daughter, Beverly Jo Anderson.

Born September 6, 1908, in Woodburn, to Eli and Everna Walker Frizzell, she married Joseph Cartwright on June 6, 1929, in Leon. She was a teacher in Clark County and served as director of the Cedar Rapids Children's Home for 10 years until retiring in 1974
