• Biography. John Marvin Edgar spent many of his younger days in bed, due to his bad heart and arthritis. When he was 14 the doctor gave him up for dead, yet the next day when the doctor came by John Marvin was sitting up in bed playing his guitar. These illnesses developed in him a great interest in books. He loved to read mysteries and play cards. He was very interested in science fiction and how the world would be in the future. He could play the following instruments, guitar, piano, zither (similar to an auto harp), violin, fiddle, and a banjo. All of these instruments were self taught, he played in many area bands. One zither he donated to the St. Louis, Missouri Music Museum, they have encased in a glass case with a golden plaque bearing John Marvin's name. It was a rare piece they were happy to get since so few of them are left in existence. He was an avid rock collector who made jewelry from polished agates. He was also an inventor who didn't patent his ideas since they were only created to make someone's (or his own) life a little easier, such as the beer can press from many years before they were marketed. He worked for many years as a welder before retiring from Dewey Portland, a cement plant in Buffalo, Iowa.
