• Census, 1910, Wapello Township, Louisa County, Iowa. 8 Nellie E. Dotson, wife, female, white, age 23, married twice (this marriage one year), four children born, three living, born in Iowa, both parents born in Iowa, spoke English • Obituary: The Wapello Republican, January 31, 1918, Wapello, Louisa County, Iowa. 2 Mrs. Samuel Dotson passed away Saturday morning at her home in Newport after an illness of a few days with pneumonia. Deceased, who was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Brady, was born in Louisa county thirty-five years ago. Her parents died when she was a little girl and she lived with Mr. and Mrs. Dan McKay near Wapello, who gave her the care of a mother and father until her marriage to Mr. Allen. They were the parents of three children, two surviving, a daughter having burned to death a few years ago. Two sons, Roy and Samuel, are surviving children of this union. On February 3, 1907, Mrs. Allen was married to Samuel Dotson, a prominent farmer of Newport. To them were born four children, Mary, Viola, Joe and Katherine, who survive with their father. • Gravestone Inscription. 6 Nellie E. (Brady/Allen) Dotson's gravestone is located in Fairview Cemetery, Wapello Township, Louisa County, Iowa. The inscription on the stone is: "Nellie E. Dotson, June 26, 1886 - January 26, 1918" Nellie married John F. Allen on June 22, 1902 in Wapello, Louisa County, Iowa.1 (John F. Allen was born in 1872 in Marion County, Indiana 1 and died between 1908 and 1910 1.)
• Marriage Fact. Researcher Caecilia Wilson sent the following information: I found their wedding license at the Louisa County [Iowa] court house dated June 22, 1902. Nellie was 15 years old and John Allen was 27. Nellie next married Samuel Dotson, son of David Dotson and Mary Jackman, on February 3, 1907.2 (Samuel Dotson was born on March 25, 1858 in Louisa County, Iowa,3 died in 1931 4 and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Wapello Township, Louisa County, Iowa 9 10.)
• Research. Sam Dotson's Louisa County, iowa biography stated he and Nellie Brady were married February 3, 1900, but this date is apparently incorrect, as Nellie's marriage to John Allen was in 1902 and her marriage to Sam was apparently was after the death of John Allen (which was sometime between 1908 and 1910). The 1910 federal census stated Samuel and Nellie had been married for one year. That seems a possibility. Nellie's obituary, however, stated she married Sam February 3, 1907. |
